The Feds, well, they're the big bully. Most states will cower down to them. If even 1/3 of the individual states would stand up to them, others would soon follow and the stranglehold would then cease. What most states have forgotten is that the Fed Gov't was made "TO ASSIST THEM"(!!), not so that the Fed Gov't could control the states. Over time, the Fed Gov't has taken good notice of their size difference and bullies around most of the individual states.

Look back in recent history at EVERY - SINGLE - TIME that several states have gotten together and said NO!. The Fed Gov't used to back off. The current admin just keeps standing their ground, believing that a few of the banded states will back down - which usually some do. That just makes the Fed Gov't stand stronger. It's all a bluffing game, aptly named "politics".

Think of it like boating.

Yes, boating...

You are on a boat on a lake or in the ocean. You pee over the side.

The Department of Natural Resources, Local Police/Sheriff/, Fish and Wildlife service et al will give you a ticket. You will be fined and punished.

The city diverts 6 million gallons of untreated raw sewage into the lake/ocean.

Oops, my bad. No penalty.

See?

The government can poo on you, you can't pee on them.

YEP! POLITICS!

It is a legal question that has been argued before. There are precedents and cases that give the federal government jurisdiction in those decisions. Federal courts uphold them. Honey chile, the South done lost that "states rights" discussion quite awhile back. And for the record, you Yankees won. Support your Federal government please. They send me good yankee dollars every month...
