My farmer had harvested some potatoes on one of his fields and said I could detect in those areas. So, after watching some rugby I decided to go and hit the field this afternoon. I only managed about 2 "hammered" hours ( 5 Cru minutes :laughing7:) before it started to rain too heavy to carry on. Never the less, I'm happy with my finds, and the field looks like it might be a good one :icon_thumleft:

1.webp
A lot of musket and pistol balls, some are still in soak.

2.webp
A handfull of coins, including a Charles 1st farthing (top), a jetton and a 10 Centimes of Napoleon 3rd 1861

3.webp
Today's buckles

4.webp
When I saw this in the hole, at first it looked like a Roman brooch, so I'm including it cos it fooled me :tongue3:

5.webp
Some of the usual suspects

6.webp
A little bronze open work (front)

7.webp
(back)

8.webp
Small lead weight, about an inch square. Could even be a gaming piece.

9.webp
A piece of silver scroll work

10.webp
The hallmark, somewhere between 1776 and 1896. The latter date is more likely, but the workmanship is quite crude.

11.webp
Another mark

12.webp
The biggest piece of shrapnel I have found yet.

Anyway, thanks for looking :icon_thumleft:

:hello:

Looks like the makings of a good field Ian, the Hallmark date is 1900 :icon_thumleft:

Nice digs  You boys sure have it good overseas. I'm thrilled if I dig a 100 year old silver. You fellas get pissed if your find is from the 'after death' era :laughing7: Super hunt!

BTW, is that a picture of Freddie Mercury in your avatar? :laughing7: :headbang:

P.S. - You must've sent my invitation to hunt with you to the wrong address. PM me & I'll give it to you again :tongue3:

Nice Silver find .
These are the fields of IIwww, who did the last hunt?

Hi Colin, the field does look good, no roman yet though :tongue3:. As far as the hallmark goes, those pesky little A's all look the same to me :tongue3:

Hi "H", the amount of stuff coming out of the field makes me think this one hasn't been hunted yet :dontknow:

Cheers mate :icon_thumleft:. There are old victorian houses down one side of this field and an old Italian POW camp on another side. Should make for some interesting detecting :laughing7:

Thanks for that Colin :icon_thumleft:, it measures about 1 inch square. I'm going to give Mum plenty of sleepy pills and head back out there tomorrow for a few hours

Very nice finds today Ian!
I really like the piece of silver scroll work and the small gaming piece! :notworthy:
Sure looks like your field holds lots of potential for this fall!

WOW - I think you have another Extremely Rare Saxon Stirrup Mount - Lady on the Right, probably bush/tree (tree of life) between & missing the man on the left. I need to research, I have not seen this type from memory :o

Had a little dig around. Not very happy with the lack of flange on the reverse, although that doesn't totally rule out a Stirrup Mount. Its more in keeping with a Mount that went on leather. If it turns out to be a Strirrup Mount, it would be an Unclassified Class B & Unique to date design
Research Saxon Mounts or even Strapends as SS suggests, if you can rule these out, its a real winner :notworthy:

PS. Please measure from the centre of the tree to the right hand edge/corner, this will need to be doubled to get the full size before it was bust. This I think will be the right size for a stirrup mount :-\

Hi Cru, the measurement is 16.4mm, so 32.8mm doubled up . I managed to get a copy of David Williams book on stirrup-strap mounts for future finds :laughing7:

Good book, used to be £10-15 new, can go for £40-50. You will notice that depictions of people are extremely rare. Two people kneeling are the closest to what you have but in a way not that close at all, I'm convinced that's the 'tree of life' in the centre & a figure on each side. I don't have time right now but the size is perfect, just need to rule out a couple of other maybe's.

Very nice finds. I'm hoping to do some swinging when I visit my cousin in Galashiels next summer.

Thanks my friend, I can't answer to metal detecting in Galashiels, I know the law is different, something like " What ever is found that was lost belongs to the crown", but in latin. So be careful where you go and get permission
