It has come to my attention that

Chris,

Do you not value education?

I believe knowledge of good and evil was the downfall of man, education is knowledge is it not?

I have an Intellect, but,I'm not book smart,I never graduated HighSchool, they threw me out in my Senior year and told me NEVER COME BACK,

I have the Common Sence I was born with though, they couldn't EDUCATE that outta me Thank GOD.

Many of you seem to be very anti-school. You may not come right out and say it, but it is implied regularly.

Do you realize that the purpose of school is not to teach you tangible lessons (dates, 1+1=2, people of history).

The purpose of school is to teach you how to understand the information that you will encounter throughout your life.

I am by NO MEANS anti-school,

it's the FREE education I don't like(Public Schools) Home Schooling or a Good Private School is the way to go,

there again too as screwed up as the Economy is who can afford it!

the true meaning of real education is to teach you how to gather information and process it --at least that's what it used to be * --today its more like brain washing --with schools teaching you what you should think and how you should think -- by limiting access to information -- one limits a persons ability to "learn" --only want someone "so smart" limit their educational "input" -- its like with truck drivers driving a rig that has speed limiters --you can then only go so far ,so fast .

I believe 'educate' comes from a Latin term'educerate' to learn from within.

this is why i get dummber and dummbir :dontknow:

I have a pretty decent education and like to think I'm above average intelligence but... there are some here who seem to have a ton of "education" and not a lick of common sense. In my mind it is much more usefull out in the "real world" to have a healthy dose of both. There are those here who can look at a table saw and in less than a minute they can calculate in their heads what the RPM of the blade is in relation to the RPM of the motor versus the size of the pulleys while taking into consideration the drag caused by the belt. But they haven't got brains enough not to stick their hand in it.

Talk about brain calculations, take a batter in baseball,a computer isn't able to
calculate from the time the ball leaves the pichers hand to the batter hitting it with all the variables involved.

Hope I said that right for folks to understand it.

There are 2 types of people here,

those that are Intellectual and those that have an Intellect,

VERY dangerous lot the first are!

God Bless

Chris

Everybody has an intellect. Whether it be 1 or 200. We never truly know what somebody's intellect is. All we can do is make an appromixation by testing. The testing itself is an appromixation. Hence an IQ is not a very reliable statistic because it is an approximation of an approximation. Never put much stock in them myself. However, everybody has an intellect even if we can't precisely pinpoint it.

An intellectual is one who applies his IQ to a given problem/quandry/idea/whatever. This can be done voluntarily or inadvertently. Everybody does this as well. The ratio of voluntary to involuntary intelletualization varies given the person. However, everybody is an intellectual to some degree.

WorlkTalker, perhaps we can find some different words to describe what you are getting at in the OP?

Respectfully,
Crispin

Crispin,

I do not know how else to say it,

glad to hear from You man!

Well let me take a whack at deriving your intent. Disclaimer: Always dangerous to interpret and derive.

Perhaps what you meant to say is:

There are two types of people around here.

1. Those that examine every microdetail of everything and fail to appreciate the general concept that the microdetails lead them to. (reductionist)
2. Those that examine the general concept for what it is and do not disect every microdetail of it. (wholist)

Very dangerous the first type when seeking to justify a means to an ends.
Very dangerous the second type when seeking to justify an ends to a mean.

Respectfully,
Crispin

Well,

They both are sound statements,

myself I don't fit into either,I have the GOD given sense I was born with, although I always

do not exhibit it!

I was told (hearsay) that learning ( education) will liberate. Of course that education doesn't have to take place in a school (maybe, depends).
For someone with common sense, they might come up with a solution to a problem provided the solution doesn't require "Special Knowledge"
Special knowledge has little to do with common sense. EX: Long ago when adding machines went digital (red numbers) one broke and I asked if I could take a look. It was not mechanical, it was encapsulated, and I had no clue how it worked. I couldn't fix it. Special knowledge.

An education introduces a student to that special place where this knowledge might be found. Unfortunately even with this access doesn't translate to solving all problems as there are people with a specific aptitude and then there are generalists. The generalists will outperform a specific overall. A generalist might not blow away test scores or have as high IQ but because they can cover so many bases the way their mind works, they will prevail at problem solving, which is what IQ means.
My neighbor was a rocket scientist (really) but when he wanted to build an adobe wall he went to a three day adobe school. For those that might not know, it doesn't take an education to build an adobe wall. No liberation, a specialist.
Anyway g'day
