I met up with my detecting partner (camper on TNet) on Saturday at the mall. She had trouble getting the coil cover off her coil and we were meeting some prospective detectorist to maybe plan a hunt together. Anyway we brought some of the things we had found to show these new people. I had a couple of display cases with some of my finds and she had her little pouch that she brought her coins, jewelry and misc items. Well after I was able to pry the coil cover off, we started looking over our items. She admired my displays while I went through her pouch. Most of the coins I had already seen since she showed me them the few times we were able to get a hunt together last year. One of them took me by surprise and I could not believe what I held in my hand. I asked her if she knew what she had there, which at the time she did not but NOW she does! She was kind enough to let me borrow it so I could photograph it and post it to the site for all of you to give her the proper kudos that she deserves. Well she had this coin mixed in with other coins in a pouch and I got a napkin and carefully folded it in that until I got home in which I took my 1911 V nickel out of its plastic coin holder and put this in. Now it can be handled carefully. At first I thought it was English but I definately knew it was Colonial. I could see the "17" on the bottom but the rest of it is pretty bare. DOing some research I found that it is actually a Reale! I can see the roman numeral III on the obverse to the upper left of the bust and I guess it is George III?? It does say Carolus III and the rest if very hard to see but when I went to this website this morning I see that the exact coin is in the banner...just better condition than this one.

The one in the banner is a 2 reale. Can anyone tell me if this is the same based on the designs that can be seen? I cannot see where (based on the banner coin) where the "2" is. Not sure if the design was only used on 2 reales and the others had another design. Maybe one of you fine experts in colonial era coinage can shed light on this for her.

Anyway I am still shocked to be having in my possession a coin that was around and used when we were stil colonies of England and just forming our own country.

A big CONGRATS to camper for this excellent find!!!! Now if she only remembered where she found it!!! :o :o :o

Nice find. Your right it's the same as the banner coin.

Nice find! What is the size? A 2 reale would be near the size of a 50 cent piece...1 reale would be dime sized and half real smaller...

it is a tiny bit bigger than a penny. It is now in a coin holder for nickels and is moving around in that. Bigger than a dime but definatly not haf dollar size.

Thanks

PS as romeo says we need to know the size..........

Congrats to Camper, finding a half real, one real or two reale is still great, no matter which demonination. Also, Carolus is Charles

cool digs,.... I had mine for almost 5 yrs before I knew what it was...... thankfully T-Net helped me out on it...... mine is a half reale 1810.. or so I think on the date... VERY worn.... def a reale...... mine was found under the football bleachers at our local High School.. they date from 1913....... an old house had been near them prior to 1913... great digs!

thanks for the replies...and thanks Don for the pics of the various ones. I believe hers to be the 1 Reale now.

Wow, Nice find! Congrats! I found one similar to yours years ago, here in Ohio.

Mine is a Mexican Reale. They were legal tender in the US in the early years. A buddy of mine found
one in his front yard when I was showing him how to use his new detector.

Again, Congrats!!!
