Today I was determined to get back into the thick forest to detect my serious colonial homestead sites. Rubber knee boots hosed down with Sawyer's Premium, Deep Woods Off on the upper body half, floppy jungle hat, camo bandanna and my Nox 800 broken down into a day pack. Serious dedication. I hike into woods I know quite well, or at least I thought I did. Now with the vegetation completely filled in I couldn't see farther than 20 yards. All of my familiar landmarks and features were nowhere to be seen. Not wanting to get lost I turned around and went back after an hour. A lot of prep for nothing.

On my way home I stopped in at my local General Store because a Haagen Daz coffee almond crunch ice cream bar could make it all end up right. Thinking to myself I really got screwed out of a hunt, I get out of the car and notice a fleck of gold sparkle in the quartz pebble parking lot. With my naked eye I landed an 18k piece of jewelry ringed with small cut stones. Now I'm both old and old-fashioned but I'm thinking something this tiny isn't an ear ring. It probably festoons a more intimate body part (photo on my finger tip).

I live in East Hampton and the fourth weekend is the high water mark of summer crazy. If I see a lost and found ad from a gorgeous model or movie star looking for her "ring," and end up returning it in person, I'm voting Banner.
