IT's a GOOD DAY to DETECT the BEACH! Sorta

-
Metal Detected for about four hours this morning in the sand at Long Beach, CA, in an area that I've been wanting to hit for a while now. I was testing several areas within a larger area to go back and hit it slower and deeper with my other machine.

It was dark out when I started and when I saw a big round silhouette of a coin in the scoop, I about sh*t! I had gloves on and could not tell the weight, so I just put it in my pocket and continued on. When I got back to the vehicle, I checked it out, and damn! An aluminum alloy fake! When I got home, I did research on the coin, and come to find out, its a 1922 Liberty Peace Dollar two headed magic coin.

I got a gold band, another heart pounding moment, but I don't see any markings inside.

Some of the areas I hit were a regular clad fest. I found two good size pocket spills. I found the Kennedy Half as the sun was coming up, so that got my heart going again. Come to find out, it was a 1991 Monster Clad!

I also found:

2001 Sacagawea Dollar Coin

1947 Wheat Penny

1990 100 Peso Mexican Coin that is very thick, about 1/8". With the current exchange rate, it could have been worth about Ten Bucks. But again, I researched it, and this is what I found out:
"If it is dated between 1984-1992 it is made of aluminum-bronze that gives it a gold color. It also is no longer legal tender for they have had several money reforms since then. It can be found in a coin dealers world coin box for around .25 these days maybe less"

Oh Well! Tomorrow's another day and it will be in the low 80's for the next two days. Gotta Love It!

Beautiful Sunrise picture you can actually see two low spots where the sun is shining at the waters edge!
I am always amazed at your finds and the history you provide is doubly cool!
Thanks for sharing now go home so I can find something!:laughing7:

Sadly, I also go stung by the Mexican devaluation having found a larger 1989 500 Peso the other night while detecting on a beach in Hawaii of all places. It was silver greyish in color about the size of a US half dollar coin. At the current exchange rate it should of been worth $50 to $46 after conversion.

It looks like we will not be eating out in celebration.
It turned out to be the old copper-nickel Mexican 500 pesos coin that uses the old pesos unit before the revaluation in 1993 and it is now obsolete and not at par with the current Mexican money.

In 1993, Mexico issued the "Nuevo pesos"(new pesos) in order to stem inflation, and the last two zeros were removed from the value. 500 old pesos was exchangeable to 5 new peso then. My $500 coin dated 1989 is valued at $0.50 in nice circulated with luster to $2 in mint condition, while lower grades (like my find) sell for $0.25 and less. Source(s): Standard Catalog of World Coins, 1901-2000 volume.

Oh well that is five less, HI 5 aluminum cans/glass or plastic bottles that I will have find to meet my bucket list goal this year. At this rate it will take forever to break even and if Minelab keep raising it's price of the Excalibur ll. it will not be in my lifetime (sigh)!

I feel your pain Sir Gala Clad, although your 1989 500 Peso hurts five times more :)

Thanks RG ... Yeah, if there is something strange and different on the beach, I'll find it sooner or later.

The ring maybe gold. Congrats on your finds and being able to get out, frozen in up here.

Hey Bill...did you test that gold band? looks gold to me.

Looks like a pretty productive time there at the beach!

Hi Joe, I did try a test on the band, I'm thinking it's brass.

That was quite an interesting hunt, SCBS.

Thanks for the informative details of the finds...I enjoyed reading your post.

That ring looks good to me; clean it up and check it out further...nice find.

Pics of sunrise and beach are beautiful.

Snowed in here for a couple of days..finally got the car shoveled out today, and hope to head out to the beach tomorrow.

Thank You Lorraine,

You had a couple days of snow, shoveling out car ... Yikes! That would drive me nuts.
If I want snow, I can drive 1.5 hours to the local mountains for the day, then get out of it at the end of the day.

I worked long beach back in the 70's did good near the old pike and along the sand wall going up the hill
