It's cracked, nearly broken in two, and a complete mystery to me. A coin for sure

I found this yesterday in a farm field in upstate NY. Okay, that's not exactly true. I found it in October when Smittyman and I made our trip to NY. I've been soaking it and lightly brushing it since then trying to see if I could bring out any more detail. This appears to be as good as it's gonna get. It's too fragile to do much with it. It is virtually the same size as a memorial penny. This is paper thin and I cannot see any detail left on the back if there was any.

I figure someone on here will be able to venture an educated guess or nail it on the head what this is. What do you guys think?

Have any pics of the back Beez? Is it broken into 2 pieces? It's a great looking eagle and shield that I see!

Nothing on the back OD. It's cracked but still "one piece" at the moment.

If it's the size of a penny then I'd guess a counterfeit $2.5 gold piece, can you make anything out (denomination) under the tail feathers of the eagle?

Yup that eagle is a dead ringer for the half eagle gold coin. Very cool find bud

I'm sorry quarter eagle

Counterfeit gold coin.

Very very interesting! Maybe it was broken by the person who got "had" by it...waaaaaitttt a minute, gold shouldn't crack like this! DOH! <Chucks it in a field so his wife won't find out>

I'm not seeing the banner above the eagle with "E Pluribus Unum" inside. Would it not have that?

You are right about that, I can only assume that the counterfeiter was not very good at his craft.

I think that it is an extremely cool find.
See ya soon!

** When you look at them side by side, they are exactly alike.. except for the motto. It might not be a perfect fake, but it just might be good enough to pass.

If no design on the obverse maybe made a button to look like one. My friend has a counterfeit large cent with reminance of a shank.

I've looked with a loupe and can't make out much of anything below the eagle. It's pretty toasty.
