It's that time of year

It's getting to be that time of year again. Although I try to hunt as long as there isn't snow on the ground Fall is definately my favorite hunting season.I got out to a spot Sat.. I found very little flint But did find quite a bit of pottery. The photo is of 9 pieces I found laying on top of one another, assuredly of the same pot. I marked their location and will look for more of it on my next trip.(hopefully I start getting some rim)

A couple of weeks ago I attended the annual show for the Sandusky Bay Chapter of the Ohio Arch. Society. This is the one show I like to set up at and catch up with like minded artifact hunters. I won three ribbons this year.(2nd place-Best of show,2nd place-best site/personal found collection, and 3rd place-best stone tools/slate) I was really pleased and appreciative and my wife and I had a great time.

Re: It's that time of year

We can't hunt any fields around here yet. The farmers are waiting for some reason to harvest the corn and soybeans. I went to my favorite tobacco field today only to find the farmer STILL has tobacco planted.

Really the only place to hunt right now, around here, is on the river banks by boat. That gets old since most of the banks haven't been washed by rain in a long time.

It's good that you can get out in your area. I can't wait.

Great stuff! Great displays. Congratulations on your awards.

Excellent looking collection you have Unitas. Is the Pottery you find shell or grit tempered? Most of ours is shell tempered, but we do find a few grit tempered pieces on our Hopewell sites.

Congrats on your awards and thanks for sharing this post with us.

Thanks Dork
Almost all my sites that give up pottery are grit tempered. I do however have one site that gives up shell tempered exclusively. I'm lucky to have so many sites that produce pottery. I understand that it can be hard to come by for some., u

Ah shoot. I live only about a half hour south of Sandusky Co. and would have really liked to get to see your historic finds and show you some of the stuff i'm finding here. Oh well, it's still great to see them in your photos.

Lets get together neighbor., unitas

I know what you mean. We have numerous sites in my area where the Pottery literally covers the ground and you could fill up a 5 gallon bucket in no time. I have gotten to the point that unless it is a rim piece, a handle piece, or has some sort of encising on it I don't pick it up anymore. Thanks for the quick answer.

Here are some handles I found in the past few months.

Now that is one VERY impressive and well organized collection- looks like you have some fantastic spots to hunt!

Unitas,

Congrats on the awards! You deserve them. A very nice collection. I am not too far from there (Huron Co.) Let me know when the next meeting is.I would love to come out and see the collections from that area. I could bring my personal found collection from this area. I have never found a piece of pottery in this area. I beleive they found some a Seamans Fort tho.

Happy Huntin' , Bent-Twig.

Thanks,I'm not a member of the Sandusky Bay chapter, I set up at their summer show however. There won't be another until next August. It's held in S. Amherst. I'm sure you'd be more than welcome to show your stuff as well. It's funny that you mentioned Seaman's Fort as they are establishing a museum to house the finds from there at S. Amherst. They indeed found some great pottery there.
Thanks again everyone.
