I found this in a stream in North Western Maine. It's larger than a basketball and weighs over a hundred pounds. Any help I can get identifying this would be much appreciated IMG_20170623_193915956_HDR.webp

Welcome!
That baby's going to need a huge rock tumbler to polish it. :)

Very cool. (Don't know what kind of rock, um.. "boulder" that is?)

Welcome to tnet!

Your item sure looks like a very nice specimen of red jasper, and a dandy one at that. It my be worth a little chunk of money to a arrowhead knapper or rock polisher.

Thinking jasper. If it is it’s a fairly large specimen. I know you can find some in the kennebec river. Never saw one that big, Might be worth a few bucks to a collector

If it’s the size of a basketball and weighs a hundred pounds it must be lead:icon_scratch:

I don't think it's jasper, because jasper is so brittle I don't think it would erode in the matter that rock has before it would have been pulverized into smaller shard fragments. Also did you enhance the color of that picture in order to saturate the true shade of red or redish brown it would appear to the naked eye.? I say that because the vegetation looks a little unnatural also?.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Red Rocks! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

2nd - If no one can identify your find - you might consider posting your pictures on ROCKS/GEMS for more exposure...

Here's a similar rock found in Alaska by a geologist friend of mine. He said it was jasper. Gary

Look like Jasper to me as well, as mentioned it could be worth a good bit to the right buyer, you may want to contact this seller of large rock specimens to confirm that it is jasper and possibly see if they want to buy it, they seem to be located in Maryland so not that close to you but also not all that far from you if it's worth taking it to them to sell it.

They have a red jasper rock for sale on their site that is much smaller than your's and not nearly as attractive for $222.

10" - 11 Lbs. 2 oz. Large Red JASPER (Zambia) ? Carls Rocks and Minerals

Edit: Just noticed that the site I posted says they don't buy or identify rock, so I guess you can just use that site as some info on how much you'rs maybe worth.
