This is the third bottle from Dr J B Lynas of Logansport, Indiana. You can read more about the company and the other two bottles in this post and this post.
While the other two bottles were mostly likely patent medicines, this bottle was for one of their flavor extracts, and is a distinctly different style of bottle. It would have had a paper label to tell exactly what kind of extract was in it, but that label has long since been lost to time and the elements. The only example of an extract that I could find in this style of bottle was lemon, but it might also have been vanilla. The vanilla and the lemon extracts were often advertised together. The earliest advertising I saw for these flavors was in 1902, but the product must have been around before that, so I went with 1890's for the bottle.
Dr Lynas' flavor extracts were advertised as "natural flavors".
Though that didn't necessarily mean the ingredients were natural. And apparently then, just like now, some people didn't think much of these artificial flavorings. Click to enlarge to read one writer's opinion from 1880.
The only example I could find of an intact labeled bottle of this type is this one. (Not my photo, and the bottle was not originally purple like this, but has been treated with UV to bring out the color.)
