I think I was being punished by karma for the first and only silver coin I have ever dug before today, an 1899 Barber half. I have been detecting for nearly four years, and I finally dug another. A 1943 merc. It's in great condition!
I had found a park on Google Earth that used to be a small college campus. One of the buildings burned down, but they kept the red sandstone entranceways standing as sort of a memorial. It's a cool park. I am not exaggerating in the least when I say this park is HAMMERED! I hunted for three hours and, wow, is it clean! Every single signal I dug was very iffy except a couple freshly dropped quarters I found. Made for a relaxing hunt, though. No machine gun signals binging and bonging all over the place driving me nuts. I know this place was pounded because I could see many plugs from other people. They didn't do a terrible job, but I think most experienced detectorists can spot them more easily.
Finally pulled this beauty at about nine inches UNDERNEATH a nail! (I love my eTrac) Hopefully this marks an end to my substantial drought I've been under since finding that cursed half dollar!
Thanks for looking, gang! Dan
