Jefferson Co, Il Dovetail

I picked this up last week from the finder in Jefferson Co, IL. He found it hunting a creek back in early July this year. It measures 4.25 and is one of the nicest dovetails I've seen from my part of the world. I belive the material is Cobden that has been in the water for a few hundred years.

Killer piece Mooch. The serrations and symmetry and fantastic. It makes all the running worth while when you come across one like that. That material reminds me of a stained piece of Carter? Who knows but a killer all the same.

I really wondered if the piece was carter but I really don't see much carter to use it as a comparable. The point isn't translucent at all, is carter?

I'm with some of the others. Carter Cave. The striping near the base gives it away. Some of it is very translucent, but most just shows it along the edges. Here is an old pic I took of some of my Carter pieces. I do think there are 1 or 2 that are not Carter in the pic, but you will get the idea. Your piece is a very high grade(deep red), and more rare than most Carter. Super piece!!!!!!

Lol I agree. I know guys that get on the cell and have stuff sold before they get home. Not my cup of tea but to each his own. I am sure someday my little collection will end up in some weird estate sell as well.

I'm going with Carter Cave on this one. That's my final answer.

Killer point no matter what the material.

I agree Carter Cave. Creek patina is different from river or field patina. Us older collectors in the south call then Plevna points. One site we have here in West Tennessee all Plevna /Dovetail points have fractured bases, same technique as used on Decatur points. Nice point.

I see purple in there! Nothing from Indiana or Illinois, maybe from Kentucky. Sonora is my bet. Hardin Co. is close enough.
