I was looking at one of the several sites that brought me here and saw this section of Jesuit Documents from 1610 to 1791. There are accounts of old forts, settlements and places, names no longer used and many "official" recounts of Jesuit adventures in the north. Along with MANY names of those Jesuits along with their associates which may be of assistance.

Spanish Hill

This is not really my cup of tea so I share it and do hope it does help someone in their armchair research this winter.

All I ask is that if this helps,,, let me know. I absolutely love hearing of "successful" hunts.

well, insofar as relics or individual coins go, it would be fun to find a virgin forgotten site. But if you think that such info could lead to "treasures" (caches, and such), no. For some reason the mere mention of the word "Jesuit" and "history", seems to conjure up immediate images of gold, silver, treasure, etc.... But the fact is, all these mission outposts were dirt-poor, remote, etc....

Here in CA, our 21 missions were well-supplied (in their early years of founding anyhow), and .... no ..... there's no hidden treasures that have ever been found. And it's not for lack of archaeological digs, lack of detecting around them, etc... Yes individual coins (reales), buttons, doodads, etc.... get found. But just poor-mans type fumble finger stuff you'd imagine. Standard silver reales, of which rarely ever are any of the larger than a 2 reale.

And when you go further north to the frontiers of Canada, I can not imagine that they'd be any better off. But yes, if you can find a spot which is now nothing but a corn field, then it'd be great to look for relics, a lone coin, etc....

Absolutely. I did a text search for the word "gold" in most of those doc and I was really amazed that there were very FEW uses of that word. Mostly the Writers name to be honest. These doc ALL speak of extreme poverty, illness and much death. I really did notice a lot of language similarities. Root words,, Some South American countries names origination,,, that kinda stuff.

As far as "treasure" hunting is concerned, I feel the best data here is the first hand accountability of the actual physical, mental, weather and many other "variables" the priests encountered during these times. Still, it is excellent to have access to stuff like this. Really makes you realize just how "good" we have it now and just how much the priorities of modern man have really been realigned to what we are now (deep sigh).

Oh well,,, thanks everyone for the "likes" and I have a bunch of other "oddball" stuff I have garnered up over the years to share as I can.
