as little as possible. depends n the build. you need to have everything as close to the water as possible. including the pump and motor.

Could you be more specific? Is any minimum or maximum allowable angle?

11 degrees at most in deep water but no more, shallow water it can be pretty level
if you keep the jet just under the surface you should be fine. once it starts to spread out it loses power
coincidentally the log going into the jet is supposed to be at 11 degrees, must be the magic number.
