JOHNSON COUNTY N.C. FIELD FINDS

I was in Johnson county nc on dec. 26 at my daughters house,the soybean field hadn't been cut yet so I couldn't metal detect the old homeplace in the middle of the field so I went for a stroll in the field looking for points. I found one that is broke and what I think may be a Tomahawk. I would like to know if this is what it is and what time period and tribe . Thanks Todd

Actually that is not a tomahawk. An axe! Type depending on how far around the groove goes. Is full grooved, or 3/4 grooved?

Definitely a broke point but I lean more toward The axe as being just a natural rock that looks like an axe. Hope I'm wrong.

It does look worked with a groove but can we see the ends? Might of been started......and how big is it?
Its a Sandstone cobble type. Not many axes were made from that type of rock. I do have a pestle made from the same type of rock so they did use it for working with.

It's a hammer in my humble opinion. It doesn't look like it has a bit like an ax should have, but it sure looks grooved.

looks like a maul like quito said to round on the end for an axe, still a very nice find.

Awesome finds! If you got the rain in the last two days like we did in Burke County you really need to go back and check that area again!

Nice find I'm guessing a maul also.I believe I've seen more axes than mauls.Here's an Illinois 3/4 groove....thanks for the view....mjm
