Figuring out junk car removal for the first time can feel confusing, so here is the whole process broken down, plus what to have ready so the pickup goes smoothly.

How it works: You call a junk car buyer, salvage yard, or removal company and describe the car (year, make, model, condition, whether it runs, whether you have the title). They give you a quote. Most of these companies offer free towing, which is how they stay competitive, so towing should not come out of your pocket. You agree on a day and a pickup window, the driver shows up, you hand over the signed title and the keys, they load the car, and you get paid on the spot.

What to have ready:

1. The title, signed. This is the number one thing that delays pickups. Sign it over with the buyer's exact company name, and take a photo of it first. If there is still a loan on the car, it is not really a junk car yet, the lien has to be cleared first.

2. Your ID. The driver will usually match your ID to the name on the title.

3. A confirmed price in writing. Get the quote by text or email before the truck rolls. If the driver tries to lower the price at pickup over tow fees that were never mentioned, that is a red flag, and you are allowed to say no.
4. The car accessible. Flat tires, a locked gate, a car sunk in soft ground, mention it ahead of time. Surprises at pickup are how extra fees appear.

5. Plates and insurance handled. In most states the plates stay with you, so pull them before the truck leaves, then cancel the insurance and notify the DMV. Do it after the car is gone, not before.

6. Clean the car out. Glove box, trunk, under and between the seats, the spare tire well. Years of stuff hides in a car.

Payment: cash or company check at pickup is the norm. Do not hand over the keys or the signed title until the payment is in your hand.

One scheduling tip, as a parent with a three-year-old at home: ask for the narrowest pickup window they will give you, and have everything (title, keys, ID) in one envelope by the door. Waiting around with a toddler for a four-hour window is nobody's idea of fun.

If you want to sanity check quotes before you call around, I came across this breakdown of how junk car removal pricing works that shows typical payout ranges by car type. Worth a skim so you know whether an offer is in the right ballpark.
Anyone here ever had a driver try to renegotiate at the curb? Curious how you handled it.

Do you happen to own these junk car sites you keep linking to?

Ha, no, I do not own any of them. I just search around like anyone else when I am trying to figure something out. I was digging into junk car removal for my own situation and posted what I learned along the way. Nothing to sell here, I promise.
