Junkers recovered from Thames Estuary

The remains of a World War Two Junkers Ju 88 German aircraft have been recovered from the outer Thames Estuary, 10 miles south east of Clacton.

There must still be a flock of them in the Channel. Over 300 Ju 88 were lost in the Battle of Britain.



And interesting side note. In 1940 one Ju 88 crew (four airmen) was shot down but before the ground troops dispatched from London found them they had dismounted the machine guns and fortified their position and held off the Irish Rifles for a brief time before surrendering. It was the last enemy ground action in England. The Battle of Graveney Marsh.

Even better is that after the battle and before turning over the prisoners the Irish Guard took them to the Sportsman Inn for a pint.

That was early in the war.
