Hi All,

I grew up in central Virginia outside of Charlottesville. My parents had about 90 acres of land and every summer they would plant a vegetable garden. I remember that we would always find an arrowhead or two. We knew that there had been Native American activity there. Several eyars before she passed away, my mother found what she was convinced was an artifact. I'm not so sure.

Top is shown on left, bottom on right.. What do people think? I took these with my phone. I can take higher resolution with my digital SLR. Thanks

I'm sorry to see that you done that! It started off fine I thought but yeah he totally ruined it. The most compacted core is left now. Sandpaper on sandstone will increase the temperature to make it look smooth probably. Man that one should go in the toilet where it belongs! That is not cool!

Do you listen to yourself type? It's his rock and he can do what he wants with it. The only thing that belongs in the toilet is the misinformation splattered all over this thread.

And just what misinformation would that be??

First, I and several others believe it to be a natural formation and I stand behind that 100%.

Second, if it was an actual artifact he did in fact just completely ruin it by sanding it with a piece of sandpaper so it does belong in the crapper. Harsh, yes. But it is the truth. Why would anyone take what they thought was an artifact and sand it with sandpaper?? That would be like buying a Monet and then deciding to touch it up with water colors. lol

I agree, its a rock. I was referring to the retrograde metamorphism stuff.

I was saying that b/c there's really such processes that assemble and disassemble minerals. This material in general is a tough one, b/c it can go either way from hard to soft, depending on what occurs to the crystalline structures. Google it, there is such a definition. You gotta know how your rock was formed/composed of before you can even consider it an artifact. It looked close to be along the lines but now the surface was removed. Maybe by the way the actual crystals were positioned, looking under a magnifying glass would have helped. I actually think it was something of a quartz-like ingredient that could be aged due to soil pH but the actual chance of it being an artifact is very slim now.

What you really need to know.. is the native American Archaeology of your area.

I'm not kidding or being a jerk.. most of the stones your going so in depth about were never utilized as source material for viable tool making.
Did you know there is a rock and gem forum on treasurenet?
I think you would have a blast in that forum.
