Those are state of New York Militia. Nice find.

According to Tice, your backmark was in use from 1850 to 1870. So to say it is civilwar era, I think, would depend a great deal on where you found the button.

What I am wondering is: Why was this NY militia button 8 inches down in central Texas soil? :dontknow:

well we found a main Militia button here as well. I wonder what unit occupied Calvert.

I don't remember reading that NY troups were in Texas during the war. That doesn't mean they were not there. And that doesn't mean it isn't civilwar era. It could very well be a momento brought home by a returning veteran. I know an old guy who just loves to hunt veteran home sites and he found three confederate plates doing that. But remember the relic hunters creed. If you dig it you get to name it. HH

We have found them out here in Calif,along with North,and South Carolina,and Massa. buttons.Also depth is never an indicator to "age". :thumbsup:

Many towns throughout the south were occupied after the civil war, including Calvert. Brenham was even burned by union soldiers to teach the dissenters a lesson.
