Nothing thrilling, but I need to know what this item is and what it was used for. I've strained my brain for days and can't imagine it's purpose. Any guesses would be appreciated.

That'd be my guess. Called a bar link. Something akin to this...

Maybe it just hangs something flat from a chain worn around the neck.
As configured, a widget attached to it would hang rotated 90-degrees from the plane of the neck chain.

I think he is referring to the interior portion of the link. You need a decent sized screen and it has to be enlarged to see it. I still think it's a fancy bar link of some type, probably gold plated at one time. Could be wrong though.

FreeBirdTim - How about a side view of this thing. The original photos you posted appear to be of the same side, just 1/4 turned.
This thing is driving me nuts now because the more I look at it the more I think I've seen it before for some reason.

One of the loops could have come off the other end. Come on that's not even worth mentioning imo.

Okay, I cleaned it up a little more and took photos of all 4 sides. It does not open up, so not a pocket knife or file. Keep the guesses coming!

I don't think it's a spring. Can't stretch it. I might be able to pry it apart to see what's inside, but it looks like a machine screw to me.
