Just trying to figure this out. Looks like a dragon or fish design. Guessing it was a furniture escutcheon or something?

Makers varied.
The N.W. Trade gun your sideplate was used on is a type that followed/evolved from English fowlers. Maybe around 1775 they were started being traded here. There are references to them being traded on the North side of Lake Superior 1777-80.

[The primary sourced of the Indian trade gun was factories in Birmingham and London, England.]

 

not just any gun... trade gun.... which makes this far cooler....
