Hello all!

So, I found this hot spot park recently. It is in the center of a town that was settled in 1640, and incorporated in 1749 (GOD.. I love living in New England). On the front of the park is an old Meetinghouse which dates to the mid 1700's.

So far, I have pulled nearly 300 coins from this location. Alone, I have pulled some 150 quarters ( $40.00 and change)! It has produced a ton more dimes and pennies.

Here is a picture of the park.

Anyhow, this weekend I was hunting with the Father In Law. I got a beep of a coin in an area I had already gone over. I dug out the plug, and at about 3" down, I popped this disc out. At first, I was hoping it was a Half Dollar. Seemed the right size. Upon further examination, I couldn't see ANY details on the coin what so ever, so I figured it was an electrical socket slug or something.

Well, I got home, and threw it in some Hydrogen Peroxide trying to see if I could get anything off of it. After a day of soaking and gentle scrubbing with some Q-Tips, Suddenly, last night, I saw a bust!

I nearly had a heart attack. Did I find something old?!?!

I still don't know what exactly it is that I have. I have posted in the "What's It" section hoping to find out.

Diameter of the coin is 28.9mm. Weight is unknown (don't have an accurate enough scale to weigh it).

What do you think?

Here is a picture of the coin as scanned.

Here is the picture with some lines that I drew on it to enhance what I see.

Here is the back of the coin. Sadly, it's too far corroded to really get anything off of it.

Yea I see the bust, the guy is looking right (as you see the coin). I was wondering about the vertical strip on the front and back. That is then funny, to be on both sides.... Have not yet found an answer for you... still looking. Seems to be a good hunting place, if they ever dig a hole or do some earth works you MUST be there! Don't miss that...

Hi Woody!

Thanks for your response. To answer your question/comment about the stripe.. that is actually from the scanner that I used.. not on the actual coin.

This spot definitely seems to be fantastic... Since I found that just before I left last time.. and I was thinking the park was 'done'... well, after finding this.. looks like I'll be going back again.. and again.. and again!

Looks like a Draped Bust Cent to me.
I'd give it the Hot-Peroxide treatment.
Should bring out some more detail.

I think 1886 would have been a indian head penny not a large cent.. I'm no expert tho ..just a beginner

Don't do anything to your coin yet til DonSJ or another pro coin cleaner says to do so cause you may turn your coin into a slug!!!

I would say you have a Draped Bust Large cent. Circa 1796-1807.

Good find. Too bad about the condition.

Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. I believe that the Draped Bust that a few of you suggested, including Mirage, may be the right coin. Now, when I look at the coin picture more closely, it begins to more and more look like it. See below. I've attached a comparison picture, then the same picture and I started drawing lines where I thought I could see the date. Does seem like a 1797!!

Thank you all for all your help! If anyone has any more ideas on it, please.. always feel free to let me know!
