I love Kayaking gosh-darn it. And more importantly I love where it takes me. On Saturday, i put in the Verde river right underneath a Pueblo ruin in the side of a cliff. 30 min later we paddled past a freaking mountain of obsidian. 2hrs later we end our paddle trip at Tuzigoot National Monument. Over 190 rooms, it housed over 250 people at its peak. It was occupied for over 400 yrs. Artifacts from many tribes including the Apache, Hopi, Hohokum, Yavapai and more were found here. What's neat is that in one pic you can see houses and a farm by the river exactly where the Native Americans lived and farmed 900 years ago.

Looks like a whole lot of fun and interesting place too.

The obsidian would have sunk my kayak.

Great trip and photo's.

Beautiful place!

That's me and my wife's next purchase for the Summer.... I love exploring creeks never know what you'll find.... Pretty land what state is that... Totally different landscape than Alabama

LOL. Dude, there's was sooooo much obsidian. It was this giant black hill. We could see it miles away. Literally. Of the 350 some odd points that were uncovered at Tuzigoot, over 250 were made from that obsidian.

My kayak is the best purchase I've ever made. And Believe it or not, this is good ol' Arizona. Contrary to popular belief, its not all desert and cactus.

I'm not sure I could have made it past the obsidian - I'm obsessed with how beautiful it is and would love to be able to knapp something amazing from it. My journey into flintknapping thus far has consisted of producing nothing but blood blisters from whacking my hand with a copper billet and cracking the sidewalk trying to see if I can get flint out of driveway gravel. Thanks for taking us along on your most AWESOME trip!

I'm always happy to share my kayaking adventures wi th have all of you. I took a pebble sized piece of raw obsidian from the river bank for my self but if I wouldve known how much ya'll like it it, I woulda grabbed oodles of it. Sorry for the crappy pics but it was the best I could get from my boat.

Interesting post, and thanks for the pics.

You ever tried knapping glass Bearcreek .... You use pressure more than just whacking the hell out of It.... I'd wear glasses though

Cool spot and pics .... I live on the river and kayaking is often my stress reliever ... Clears the head and you get to see a lot of wildlife that would be scared away by my motor boat. Looks like one really awesome spot that you have there .

I was at Tuzigoot in 1986. Loved that part of Az. And I remember how beautiful the farms were. Looks today like it did then. Great photos.
