Keep Finding These at Cellar Holes! What are They?

This is the third one of these iron relics I've found at old cellar holes. Looks like they may have been attached to a wooden handle, but what were they used for? Any guesses would be appreciated.

looks similar to the metal piece for a scythe handle, the one that comes off the main wooden shaft. yet they are beefier then the ones I usually find, not sure if they might be older style or something completely different.
