[/IMG]Hello. Yesterday, I got out to a field I've rarely hunted due to a very high iron concentration. I found a couple keepers among the noise. An 1851 large cent was only 1.5 inches down almost on top. It amazes me how they ride around in the fields for so many years. It read a solid, clean 90-92 on my AT pro. The good conduct medal came from the same site. I got excited when I saw the eagle! I thought it looked familiar when I picked it up. I guess it should, I received two in the early 80's, not to brag. I read about the design being the same since 1940. I read where some were numbered on the rim. I see no evidence of that on this one thou. Due to the condition of this one I feel like its an older one. Can't be sure thou. I moved on to another field today and found the padlock. Not sure but it

Great finds. I thought the eagle looked familiar too. There is a lock website if you want more info on the lock. You can register and post a picture.

I spent 20 years in the military and never received a GCM, because in the National Guard they don't give it out. There is something equivalent that I received. They also never pinned a medal on me except a AAM. All my medals were caught on paperwork and I had to go to the PX to purchase them. They were like 10 years behind on my awards, part of why I am glad I left.

Nice medal and large cent! How did you clean the cent?

Thanks, I'll check it out. It was mandatory to receive a good conduct medal after a certain period of time when I was in. Every two or three years, I'm not sure exactly what.

First I let it thoroughly dry. It looked in rough shape so I used a toothbrush, a toothpick and "NO!!" water rubbing it between my fingers over and over checking to make sure the patina was't flaking away. I found out the hard way water and old copper don't get along. Also q-tips work well to remove surface dirt without damaging the surface.
