Keeping up with Iron Patch's last hunt

Well 3 or 4 inches of snow fell overnight and myself, hunthicks and another local detectorist decided to brave the elements, hit a high of -4 degrees celsius plus the windchill… We decided to head over to the site where I found my Spanish Silver last week, however the field was occupied by a deer hunter so we obtained permission for some sites further up. The finds where slow as the grass was long and the snow on top of that so some targets were easily missed I'm sure. Pulled out tons of shotgun shells and then pops out a cartwheel penny (1797) then as you can see in the picture the other detectorist popped the largest coin I've ever seen (any ideas? looks like I see a date of 1775 on it…)…made the cartwheel look small by comparison. We then decided to try the side where the farmer said there was an old foundation, well a new barn was recently put on the site and we tried our luck anyways and BANG this cannonball was found only 2 inches under the soil…Tried another site quickly and nailed this 1855 self government and free trade token…. Hopefully next week we get some melt and the area is free of hunters to hit the good sites once again…thanks for looking….OH also showing the junk I dug to get the targets I did….not an easy hobby….:tongue3:

Nice finds.Looks like you found a 12 pounder, very nice!!Does it have a mold seem?

Wow that coin is a MONSTER! Nice cartwheel and a great cannonball. I'd call that a very well rounded day. Hope you're able to get back in your "good" site soon. Great hunt man

Yes one of my bigger ones for sure…it does have mold seem on it too...

Well, TNet taught me something else this week. I now know what a cartwheel looks like. Awesome hunt. You guys up north are teaching class!

"Sweet' I don't know where your at,but around here more then likely it would be a CS ball which are much harder to find then the union shots

We had a pretty decent day given the 4 inches of snow! The old site the cannonball popped from was so random, looking forward to getting back to that site when we can get some button signals. Might throw my post up tomorrow.

Those are nice finds, considering the weather conditions. Congrats!

Crazy day man !.
I concurr that most probably and that the RELLLY large copper is brazillian.
I got one that OD is 40 mm. (and more) My Fiirst thought was british 2 P, but was was way too thin. And no rim.

Gppd finds man.

What a great hunt in the those weather conditions. The cannon ball is a great hit, but also is the big coinage. It makes one think there is a pretty good indication that there's some smaller coinage laying there in wait.

I believe the site is actually in the woods as the finds were getting thicker the closer we got to them...

Sweet...more heavy metal! Every time I see these it makes me want to go back my heavy metal site to dig some artillery!

Nice finds, like the cannon ball.

Wow look at all the digging you did . thats a lot of signals ! Worth it though :icon_thumleft: Nice hunt ! MR

It was funny cause about 1/2 hour before finding it, I told the boys that keep your eye on cannonball signals as they could've been fired or used in the fireplace…crazy, only 2 inches under the soil…if the snow wasn't there I might've missed it, as some know when you swing a minelab over big iron right at the surface, there is an overload noise..

Talk about keeping the easy ones for yourself and making your guests dig deep! :laughing7:

PS: I don't think that large disk is a coin.
