Detector(s) used
Primary detector is a Garrett AT Pro
Also have a Garrett Ace 250
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I called Kellyco this morning and told them that I'd like to upgrade a little from my Ace 250.
I love my Ace but I wanted to get maybe a little more depth. I really didn't want to spend
more than about $300-$350, and was looking at maybe a Fisher or White's in that range.
The fellow I talked to told me the Ace 250 was a great little machine, and to get anything better
depth wise would be more like in the $500-$600 range. He suggested that I purchase the big coil
for the Ace 250, that that would give me around 30% more depth and all I had to do was pull
the old coil off and put the new one on, no adjustments or anything. The only other thing I
purchased was a coil cover which he suggested, and spent just a little over $100 for the coil, cover, and
shipping.
I really like Kellyco! And my wife is going to appreciate that I didn't go nut$

I don't know how much depth you get for that money with the bigger coil on the Ace...

But I DO know that the Tesoro Cibola would've fit the bill--and it would've been in that price range (and already came with a bigger coil)...

Of course, Kellyco doesn't sell Tesoros.

One of the members of my team has an Ace 250, and he does Very well with it. I won't say what he found yesterday that's getting posted tonight or tomorrow--but I will say it was AWESOME. :)

Best Wishes,

what type of hunting do you do, the large coil will work good for relic hunting and trying to locate a new site, but for park hunting or even an iron ladden site you should also get a small coil if you dont have one yet

I had explained to Kellyco that that was precisely what I was about to do. I usually hunt parks for coins and jewelry, but hope to in the near be doing a little more relic hunting. I know folks that use both coils (the standard and the large) and seem to get a reasonable amount more of the deeper stuff than I normally do. And I know that there are other criteria that come into play (swinging low, level, proper speed, +++, etc, etc)
But I feel that this was a good solution to an immediate issue, how to get a measureable increase in depth without breaking the bank. I feel that this probably was the best solution and appreciate Kellyco not going the salesman route and dropping a new detector on me that wouldn't necessarily have any greater positive outcome than the larger coil. We shall see, I will keep you all posted. I look forward to any other input on this matter. (I may also add the smaller coil to the arsenal before too long)

How deep deep can you reach with each coil , and what are the coil sizes

I hunted yesterday and was hitting stuff that a White's DFX and Minelab Quattro MP Premium were missing right and left. I was hunting right behind them toward the end of our group hunt of an old farm. To start with they just told me I wouldn't find anything because they dug everything that would make a noise. I started hitting coins and jewelry all in and around the holes they'd just dug. (Nothing eart shattering, just wheaties and mems and found one sterling silver earring and a sterling silver baby's ring.) They finally came over and just stood and watched me. The guy that had the Minelab was asking me all about my Ace 250. I told him that I'd just gotten the new coil Friday and that was the first hunt I'd done with it.
The two coils are the 6x9 and the 9x12. The 9x12 is really good for covering a lot of ground. And you don't have to change anything when you install it, just put it on and roll. It a fair amount deeper too.

you will get more depth with a bigger coil for sure! better coverage too. the downside is that in heavy trash, target seperation can be an issue when more than one target gets under the big coils footprint. in light trash situations you ought to do quite well though.

I could see on the screen what I was pinging at least 85% of the time. That was another
part of the show with the guys watching me, they wanted to see what the Ace was saying
was in the dirt before I dug it and it was making a good show. I was proud of my little
yeller machine. I know it's not what most of you rich guys choose to use, and thats ok.
But for the $$$$ oh yeah and $ difference, I have a flat out ball with my Ace 250!! Will I
ever get a more expensive White's or Minelab? You bet I will. But for now am I happy
with my Ace 250? You bet I am.

Nothing could be finer than swinging my Ace in Carolina in the mor-uh-or-ning!!!!

I been runnin the ace 250 with the 9x12 coil for a little over two years now. You definitely do get better depth I'd say about ten inches on a nickle maybe eight on a dime. I also agree that it's best to use it in a less trashy area, or you can do what I do. I hunt mainly parks and water. I use a cheaper BH Mark IV for the water, but use the ace for all land hunts. I run it in all metal and dig everything including Iron signals as this is where I find most of my Coppers at around eight to ten inches they ring in as Iron on the ace 250 with the 9x12 coil. Yes I dig tons of trash this way and probably only get one find to everyone Else's ten. But I do find the good things like older coppers and silver as well as gold, jewelery that is. One thing I've learned is to mark out a larger area around 200x300 feet and to skip a every three signals. This way I don't leave tons of deep dug divots in a small area as the number of buried soda and bear cans in astronomical around here. I just keep repeating my pattern everytime I hit that park and slowly but surely I clean out all the trash without angering the grounds keepers. Also one of the problems I have found with this bigger coil is that it is so deep you can get masking from underneath the good signals, which is why I don't discriminate at all with the bigger coil.

Would you recommend the ACE 250 for a 13 year old?

I got my son the BH Land Star, but since it is hard for him to use and understand, I have been using it. He does want another metal detector and has already put that on his Christmas list. I have been looking at the ACE 250 and it is also within my price range of around $200-250.00.

Definately, you get a lot of bang for your buck. The 250 has allot of the features of the much more expensive models, with good depth, light weight, and low price.

I love my Ace 250!!!

We had gotton our son a metal detector for his birthday one year, the Ace 150 (we didn't want to get a real expensive one if he didn't really enjoy it)....well, we were right, he wanted to look for treasure but didn't want to do the work to find it :-[.... so it sat in the corner for nearly 5 months. Spring came around and I decided to take it out in the front yard....I was hooked (always wanted a detector anyways). So that Mother's Day, hubby got me a Minelab Exp II. I was so siked, but I do not like it. :'( ... Sorry, but I'm a short person, only 4 foot and 11 inches and my arms are pretty short and I could not get the machine to adjust for me and I did NOT like the sounds.... so hubby went and ordered the Ace 250 for me, when it came in, I gave him the Minelab and I have loved my Ace 250!!!

Now, we bring the Ace 150 with us incase someone wants to detect!

I have both coils for it. I usually use the smaller one when the area is real trashy, I go nuts using the larger one in a trashy area!!! But I have gotton some sweet finds with the bigger coil!

And I have walked behind my hubby and his Minelab and picked up targets he missed!!!! Go Momma! Go Momma!! LOL

My boys aren't as excited about detecting yet, but they love the finds. I'll give them some time and then put the detector back in their hands!!! But they do enjoy looking for shark teeth and other fossils!!!

So, I recommend the Ace 250 for the beginner, intermediate and experienced detector and it's great for kids, esp in adjusting for their height and it's lightweight...that Minelab was too heavy!!!

Hope you find lots of wonderful relics with your big coil!!!

I have a high dollar detector and an ACE 250. I'd say I use the ACE about 90% of the time because of it's much lighter weight and easier to swing with my back injury. I too have walked along behind a DFX owner and picked up targets he missed. I have never posted it though because of the notion that no one would believe me. Well, it's true. That's kinda' why I get defensive when someone says theACE250 is just a "starter" machine. The deepest coin I have recovered with it was a silver dime at 9" with the standard coil in a planted deep coin hunt. I have all 3 coils, but hardly ever use the large one because of the extra weight. Like I said .....my back problem. The little coil is great for hunting around sidewalks or concrete slabs with rebars or around playground equipment. Turn the sensitivity way down low and it will still pick up coins or silver in spite of the nearby heavy iron. Ditto really trashy areas. No matter what kind of other detector you use, I really think everyone should have an ACE in the hole. Monty

3 coils? I thought they only had 2 (one that comes with the detector and the big one)...hmmm..will have to check out the other one. We bought my Ace and extra coil back in 2006....

Oh, I don't mind posting if I go behind my hubby and find his misses! LOL....two of his misses were pocket spills!!! WHOO HOO!!! LOL ;D ;D

I'm glad I'm getting some solidarity on this. But it still has a lot to do with the way you
hunt, and I know that. I'm not delusional. But the Ace 250 is a great detector, regardless
of price. From a marketing standpoint, I think Garrett left money laying on the table with
it. I know they've made a lot of people very happy with it.

Thanks for every comment, I like hearing from everybody!
