I got out for a short hunt today. I managed three coins before I called it quits. Once I got home to clean my finds up I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had a 1911 D penny. These are considered a key or semi-key date for the series as only 12 million or so were produced. The values on the coin vary wildly from $5.00 in good condition to a few thousand in mint state. I think it is probably around fine or maybe very fine condition which values from $30 to $50. That's not too bad for a penny! Anyways, I am no expert at grading coins. What do you think this coin might grade? 20160912_213854.webp20160912_213815.webp20160912_213737.webp

Good find I think lots of people don't know key dates The coin looks pretty good hard to tell without it being in hand. Thanks for sharing your find!!!!!

Looks VF+ to me, however it looks to have the whole enviromental damage thing going on, so it will net less. Nice find.

Check eBay completed auctions for real value. But please keep in mind this one does have environmental damage as noted above so expect some discounting. Congrats!

Its a nice semi key date, and I would just put it in my collection if it were mine. As others have said, with the environmental damage chances are you wouldn't get enough money to make it worth selling.

I blew the coin up for better detail here:

I looked at Fee-Bay completed listings and I agree. Put it in a collection, Unfortunately, unless you find a buyer not doing their homework, I would expect it not to sell for over 5.00. I would start a penny collection and be proud I have found it

Thanks for all of the replies! I do believe it will go in the collection. I am not much of a seller of my finds. I like to look over everything I have found as it always amazes me that I pulled that object out of the ground, where it had been for many years!

Nice wheat - I can only go by what I read in the red book, but as others have said, I would simply put this one in my collection. Congrats!

We in Denver salute you!
