Found this about 20 minutes ago in my box of nickels and I'm freakin out! Very exciting but have a question, how can I clean this? Should I try?

Nice!! Love finding old coins.

ive already seen this thread somewhere else...

put it in hot peroxide for about 30 min or so

I would use either a SOS pad or wire brush..... but then I'm a beach hunter tourist gold. Nice find!

Peroxide first. and I disagree with Dennco on the SOS pad. Never clean a coin with that. You wreck the value of the coin and possible will destroy the finer details on what is already a well worn coin. Congrats on the find. I have done over 3000 dollars worth of nickels and never found anything like that.

Sincerely, GarouLady

Well, here's hoping that you do find something amazing in your next box!

I wouldn't touch that coin before I touched base with the coin forum folks. You can ruin the value of a coin quite easily in trying to improve its appearance! Nice find, though!

Yep, had a lot of good advice from members and I've put it in my drawer of finds. Not gonna try and do anything with it except put it in some kind of protector.

Stay on the beach.. possibly worst advice I've ever heard.

I think that was sarcasm.

Yes and no. Probably joking about staying on the beach, but I agree with him - that is about the worst thing ever you could do to a coin. A wire brush would reduce the value of ANY coin to its base metal value. In this case, it would become a 1.2c nickel. I don't think you could ethically even put it back in a roll and sell it back to the bank after taking a wire brush to it. No offense, but this kind of advice rivals those late night infomercials that try to get you to convert your 401k to physical gold...

May be.. but I wouldn't be too happy with someone not catching the sarcasm and doing it.. it's a help thread. I'm as snarky as they come, but you don't give bad advice to someone that might take it.
