Great stuff Molly  I wish I could find a cool knife. Someday

Boy that is some rough material , great finds none the less. congrats

Yeah, pickaway, very rough material, Rholite isn't the prettiest rock I admit, the cultures here didn't have much good rock to work with, Quartz was very hard to knapp with, I've never found a Quartz knife, scrapers yes. Mind you there are different types of Rhyolite, but yeah mostly crude, Still the thing I like about it is, they look used, old & I found them, lol. ::)

Thankyou for your comments guys.

Molly. :)

Rather than a slaughter area, might be an source of lithic material partially worked blanks. #5 looks like a Paleo Square scraper...nice find.

So you don't think these are blades/knives? also I'm not sure there are any Paleo at my site, I have only found Woodland/Archaic Artifacts, not even as much as a Paleo broke, hmm, this is interesting. Tell me more. lol.

Molly. ???

I have to agree Molly. I think that may be a paleo square knife. Also, these things found in groups are possibly caches. Dang I'd love to nose around there!!
BTW those are some cool finds dear

Ok, this as got me all excited now, here are a few brokes, I wasn't sure what they were but, a friend of mine thinks they are Hardaways. Now Hardaway-Daltons are Paleo right? Take a look, tell me what you think.
If these are Paleo, I might have found a new location. BTW, there are no signs of Archaic Artifacts in this field.

Molly. :)

Firstly, not all square knives are paleo. In fact, more have been found in dateable context other than paleo, than paleo. It's one of the old myths that keeps going around in collecting circles. Similar to how unifacial oblique parallel flaked scrapers are paleo, "birdpoints" were used just for small game, etc.

Second, her knife doesn't appear to be a typical square knife. It's reminiscent of a Guilford knife, they actually come in many configurations. Guilford was a huge phase and culture in the Piedmonts. I think it was Coe who done some specific work on the Guilford in the Piedmonts (as well as a whole guide on artifacts for the area itself)? I'm pretty sure I have some of that literature somewhere. Anyways, Guilford lanceolates can be concave, convex, rounded, or even squared. They're as bad as the Gary point in Oklahoma and Texas (Don't get me started).

Also, there are two types of Hardaway. The Hardaway-Dalton, which is a dalton aged point and then the Hardaway side-notch. Dalton pretty much define the start of the archaic period. There's alot of controversy about the side notched Hardaway, some think it could date paleo. I don't think they have anything real substantial as far as dates though, alot of it is based on speculation.

Third...I agree, she may very well be on a quarry site.

Thankyou guys for your comments, The square blade is logged as a Guilford in my collection, I would love to find Paleo but, Least I was correct in typing it, either way I am pleased. ;D
Thanks again.

Molly.

That's a 'Round-Base Guilford' -Rhyolite. Also known as a Lanceolate point. Middle Archaic. Nice find. Glad you showed me that, If you have any more of the ol' Rhyolite I would like to see it/them.

Molly. ;D
