Are these all knives? They show stemmed spear points for middle and late archaic traditions here in Maine. 1452515704669-1603302395.webp mjm

Just as a rule of thumb, past a certain size, most large points that one might be inclined to think of as spears, are in fact knives. You might be able to determine from usage wear on your nice examples. Just a rule of thumb, but I go with knife for most sizable points....

I agree Charl.

Those are some great finds J.

Lance or dart points are usually sleek for good penetration. Knives, well they take many forms from sleek to clunky and their use dictates a different force applied to them than spear or dart points. I can't imagine a lance point with much width, especially near the base. The base of a halfted knife needs to be wide since that is where the most force is applied, and it is different than the force of a point hitting its mark.

quito brings out a good point, an this is JMO. That for the reason that he stated you find so many artifacts being broken at the stem is that is where it is the weakest. Great finds MJM.

Thanks guys I was looking at bourques swordfish hunters...He shows some examples of projectile points that are up to 6" long...mjm
