There has been some questions about the use of the little 2 prong buckles that I have always called suspender buckles. I knew there were other uses also such as pants adjusters ( like Kuger correctly I.D.ed and posted pics of. Thanks and you are exactly right ) they were also used as vest buckles. But, they were indeed used as suspender buckles. I have collected these little small buckles for many years and have them that date from the 1840's to the 1940's. I also do a lot of research on their use. Here is a link from "google patents" (wonderful research tool ) that shows the use of one of these buckles on a pair of suspenders:

If this is Donnie V, I know you have a fantastic collection of suspender buckles. Maybe you could start a suspender buckle thread on the Best Finds forum. I have found a few nice ones in the last couple years.

hey Steve..........

Yep, its me. Been off the forums for awhile but I'm back. You still digging that OLD stuff up there? I'll think about posting some of my collection sometime but I just retired and have been trying to catch up around here so I can go digging this fall! Good to see you here!!!! Hey!!!Thank you!!!Thats all I have been asking,is for some proof!!!I have a tidy little collection myself, dates from 1852-and never have found a "pair",which I know goes against there use on vests as well, but I have seen them on vests, and of course on pants.I just have never seen that exact type on suspenders.I would love to see yours sometime!!

Here is a frame I have handy.I have a considerable amount more....someplace!!Moving is terrible :-\

Donnie, I was impressed with just the 2 boxes you showed me when I interviewed you for AD Magazine last week. I had no idea that there were literally hundreds of styles and makers. HH, Quindy.

Darn Kuger, you have some KILLER buckles there. No joke, you have a great collection of them. BTW, there are several other patents ( with drawings ) of suspenders with the same type buckles most from the 1840's to 1860's. I appreciate your imput Kuger as I've followed your post for a long time and respect your knowledge. Tennessee Digger

Yes, alot of people swear that they're suspender buckles.... others swear that they're pants buckles. I've always tried to tell folks that they BOTH are correct, that these

buckles were a versatile lot used in several different applications dealing with clothing. I've got a ton of these buckles from Civil War camps and housesites over the years, still a

pleasure to pull them up and see "PARIS" or a date like "1854"...which was the date of the last one that I dug up. :occasion14:

Quindy.... yes there were what seems to be hundreds and hundreds of styles and designs and I still see some that I've never seen before. When I first started digging ( around 1866 I think ) I used to sometimes find them and usually tossed them away. Stupid. I like them and I'm still trying to find some for my collection. Donnie
