We spent the first 3 hours 15 mins gridding a fairly large L shaped area of bird cover that was drilled late. It was on our newish permission & a field we had never tried. Looked good has it was on a ridge of high ground. We found some evidence of Roman activity, with 3 large Roman Nails, a Locking Mechanism & 1 bit of pottery (some old lead but not enough to be a site). It's breadcrumbs to somewhere nearby, so good intel for future scouting missions. It wasn't until the last run that Cru'dad got the smashed Silver Thimble & I then got half of a Will III Shilling. I turned & asked Cru'dad to be careful & look for the other half when he passed my spot & seconds later he cried he 'got it'. 7 metres back from my half, & fairly rare to get both bits right off the bat in a ploughed field.
We then tried a few areas of failed oilseed rape where Cru'dad lucked out a hammered, plus the flooded area again (nothing there), & an area of failed wheat - 1 strap-end.
5 hours total:
Hunts Button (Fox head)
Livery Button
Roman Iron Locking Mech.
2 Broken Spec Buckles
Tudor Strap-end
1696 Will III Shilling (pretty scarce find, compared to hammered)
Silver Thimble - With ET in 2 hearts held by 2 Cherubs - UPDATE - Thanks to Jamie's ID it's 17th-18th C (nice early example, even if busted up) - NOW REPORTED AS POTENTIAL TREASURE.
