that is some fine gold Doc.How far is it classified before your test runs?
For these flow modeling tests we go to 1/4"
In field tests we don't classify.
We run excavated soil with large rocks and allow the equipment to run for whatever it's set for.
Our highbankers are set for 1/2" and our dredges do not classify at all.
I've got a question if I take my 3 foot by 8 inch sluice and put in gold hog mat what would the average recovery rate be if I did not classify? I'm looking for more dirt being run. Thanks
Stream sluice? Highbanker?
Stream sluice
Well....... the full answer would be three pages long.
If you ask that question, I would suggest you read and REALLY understand what hydraulic equivalence is and how it impacts mining in general.
This is a GOOD read for the winter months >>>>>>> http://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0594f/report.pdf
Spend a few days with it and think about it, then read it again.
Basic / incomplete answer.........
The amount of water (both depth and speed / energy / velocity) needed to move a 2" rock down your sluice is quite great.
Therefore smaller particles, even though they are "heavier" (specific density) will also be moved out.
So, generally speaking classification REALLY helps. If everything running through your sluice were 1/16".... recover would be EASY as pie.
However, you would move very little material.
Our mats, like many sluice surfaces, offer a sort of "false bottom" where only smaller particles enter a secondary exchange process.
Hidden exchange zones where larger rocks simply tumble past.
However, you STILL have to get those larger rocks to tumble past, meaning HIGH velocity.
This will still impact the hidden zones.
Most people running a stream sluice will classify to 1/2" or 1/4".
Most of the commercial ops we work with have dual or multiple classification stages.
Hope that helps a little.

@goldhog
i have a highbanker i recently built out of a proline sluice box, the box has the riffles and expanded metal. I have a quick question about what to run under the expanded metal, currently i only have black deep-v matting and the carpet that came with the sluice. Most of the gold in my area is very fine. I do plan to buy some UR matting when i get some extra money but until then which option would you use?

Ive got two questions for you. this is my setup the riffles and the expanded metal are welded together, one solid piece. So for now i cannot separate the riffles from the expanded metal right now. So as of right now would the carpet or v-mat be better? On a side note i do plan on buying gold hog matting here pretty quick, i was thinking a combanation of UR and Razorback, is that a decent idea? Also when i do upgrade do i run the new matting all the way to the top of the sluice, the full 36 inches?
