I spent a few hours this past weekend searching a wooded area next to where a grist mill once stood. I was very happy to find a large cent, though it is in rough shape. I am pretty sure it is an 1838, but I wiped the date off with the gentle stroke of a toothpick… aarrggh! Also found a few buttons, one of which says “treble gilt - standard colour,” so possibly British. Some miscellaneous finds include the tops of two change purses, I think, a buckle, and an old pin with a mysterious woman’s face on it. Finally, I dug this hollow tube with some intricate floral designs on it. It appears to be brass and about 3 inches long. Any ideas? Thanks for checking out my post. Happy hunting.

You had a great outing with some awesome finds. Congratulations

Nice digs Lenmac. The LC looks like an 1828 from my perspective. I think I can see angel wings on that old pin. That ornate tube is curious. I hope someone can ID it.

Thanks! It could be 1828, but I could have sworn I saw a 3 - who knows. Angel wings looked plausible, so I cleaned it up a bit more and attached a new photo. Now it sort of looks like she is coming out of a plant maybe. The tube is interesting to me; maybe it has something to do with drapery. I was hoping it looked familiar to someone. Maybe I will post it on the What is It forum.

Nice finds! Love the LC. The tube may be the handle off of an old double-edged safety razor. Like this.

Interesting finds, the pin reminds me of a mermaid, and I agree Kray the tube looks like a razor handle. Are there any threads inside?

Thanks. Razor handle is a possibility, I suppose. I have never taken apart an old razor, so I really can’t say. This tube is hollow, fairly thin, and has no threading on either end. Maybe that info helps.

Thanks. Mermaid is an interesting thought. I will have to look at it again closely. No threading on either end of the tube. It seems to be slightly tapered too, as the opening is a little narrower on one end.

So both ends open? what's the diameter?

Hi … yes, open on both ends, and you can see all the way through. One end is a half inch diameter, the other end is just slightly smaller. The length is three inches.
