Went back to the circa 1800 house tonight with my son...headed directly for the spot where I dug the 3 Large Cents to get another look... ::)

Had a solid +95 Iron reading 6" from the spot the large's came from and decided to dig anyways...and glad I did!

Found the end of an iron butter knife...looks colonial...re-scanned the hole and got a +87 reading and out pops this beautiful 1Reale!! Couldn't believe it...now the coin spill is complete!

Looks to be 1785....but hard to tell...still beautiful to me!

Here's a shot of the 3 Large's after soaking in oil and their long lost silver friend...can anyone tell me how to get the green crust off old copper?

I'm guessing a long soak in oil is the only way not to hurt the detail on the coin.. ???

Thanks for all the great comments on this discovery..glad I have you all to share it with! ;D

the green crust = patina.. id keep it on the coin.

I can't agree More.

Keep the Patina in tact.

As for the Crust, the Only way I know is Electrolysis.
But it will Remove the Patina. Even the way I do it.
In Short Dips. I only do it to try & I.D. considering condition
of those otherwise, I'd leave well enough alone ;)

Nice Silver !

Thanks for all the ideas! Here's a pic of the opposite (troubled) sides....it's pretty thick. :-\ But there looks to be good detail underneath..

Also pics of the rest of the finds from the property thus far....Ox shoe, buttons, buckles, spoon bowls, iron sifter, etc.....and some 'whats its' ???

And....two nice bells...one large one that cleaned up nicely. :)

OH....in the second pice with the close-up of the buttons and hem-weights...lies the Knife Blade that the Reale was hiding under...it's good size and completely blocked the silver from being detected.

Dig it all!!! ;D

perhaps (just a muse)
soak them OO
then freeze them over night then the next day
heat up some OO in the nuker
then drop in the frozen coins
repeat and see if the expanding (heat)
and contracting(freezing)knocks the crude off ???

Great "stuff" I never tried freezing but I have baked coins in the over at 250 degrees for about 15 min. and then drop in room temp olive oil(virgin olive oil)

Les
havent tried it yet but as i said just a muse hope it helps/works

woah! awesome finds - Don in SJ has had really good results w/ the hot peroxide method for LC's, check the cleaning and preservation thread. BTW, are you the one who used to have the Man in the Mountain and get 'er dug as your avatar?

Super finds, xlt!

The coins are great, but I really love the bell.

Nice post too.

Thanks for sharing.

Nope...always had the 1858 Quarter as my Avatar...first seated find from years ago. :)

Thanks for the compliment on the post Paul...and I'll try the peroxide bath on one to see how it works.

Thanks for all the help and HH,

You've got a great site! That reale is the icing on the cake! I've dug two and hope to dig a lot more...

Congratulations that is really awesome to get all of those great finds in one spot.
