Large Cent Follow Up- Few but Good Finds At The Disappearing Permission

Obtained permission this past Saturday for a colonial field that is scheduled for development “soon”. Scouted with detector that day and recovered an 1831 LC. Boy was I excited to hit that field! Had off today and showed up just after 9am to find highlifts, tree service guys chopping down 100+ year old oaks, surveyors driving stakes, and bulldozers being unloaded. I walked over to a hardhat and introduced myself- told him who said I could be there- powered up- balanced out and away I went! The grass was almost knee high but now I was determined! I trudged through the surprisingly quiet grounds for the better part of the day, dodging falling trees and annoying surveyors by standing in the way of their equipment! I wound up recovering some decent finds but I’ll tell you- I was, and am quite upset thinking of how much is about to be lost tomorrow morning to bulldozers and “progress”. First photo shows the keeps- not much trash collected at all. Top is the 1831 LC from my scouting- todays finds beneath. From the left- the smallest tombac button I’ve ever seen, a nice heavy silver pendant that was deep! The next object I am very happy with- it is a lead seal marked “ERIE RR” (Erie Rail Road). Next row from left shows an odd trapezoidal weight of some sort- also sat at about 10”. Next a large buckle and a pair of wheaties. Old silver still eludes me!

Nice finds Ive seen so much land and history dozed away also. I think you will be able to pull alot of good stuff out of there once they strt turning dirt I would try to save all you can but you should do well I hope Good luck my friend Tommy

Congrats on the finds and good timing. 2 winters ago I was looking around on google earth and came upon a piece of land with some great history that was to be developed. It appeared that the deal had gone through quite a few years before. With some luck maybe it was still there. I went and checked it out... It looked like they were far from developing it just a couple orange markers. I hit the place a few times and found very little. Then just like that it was pretty much gone. Complete annihilation. It was land with history going back to the 1600's and a Native American history as well that was given to the town for perpetuity. They sold it to make a few bucks. Now it's some ugly mcmansions. Breaks a little piece of my heart to see it go.

To me, your mystery piece looks like an ear broken off a cooking pot.....where the bail handle would have attached.
