Very slim pickings in the wet sand recently.

But I'm persistent and I finally scored a FIRST for me! A large GOLD Crucifix.

Yesterday during low tide I searched my favorite beach. Got this weak signal with my Surfmaster PI (sounded like a fish hook) but I was digging everything. I scooped it out from about 6" deep...and when the surf cleared away the sand I was dazzled by the glitter of GOLD. A beautiful sight! Gold is not marked unfortunately but it has the right look for me. It's not very thick and weighs in at 7.4 g. The 3rd photo is a detail with some of my small Gold Nuggets to illustrate how the gold surface tends to abrade and become matte...similar to the placer nuggets.

Rest of the finds were mainly sinkers and fishing items and a rusty can opener and enough clad for battery money.

Gotta LOVE this hobby, sure builds patience.

HH Joe

PS: That 1st photo makes the Gold seem unnaturally dull...I believe it's just the sun angle on the matte gold surface.

Thanks for all your comments.

The cross is very thin and weighs just 7.4 g. If it was solid probably be over an ounce. I suspect it is recent but under water for a while. I found it with the PI machine but tested yesterday with my Fisher F4 and it rings up at 40 which is GOLD area. Bronze or copper would come in at closer to 70. Of course I'll get it tested to karat value.... eventually.... :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny:

I think I would get it tested, see what the purity is, might give clue if it is Pirate Booty

Great cross Joe! Can you upload a photo of the backside?

Photographed both sides .... reverse on the right.

It seems to be a stamped process and the total weight is about 7.4 g. I can't find any markings at all on either side.

I do like the design and large size. Still think it's gold of somewhere under 14K.

Sweet!

It looks to me, like on the backside of the ring loop that there is maybe some markings, unless that is some kind of erosion. Anyway lovely cross.....NGE
