Got out to an old faithful area that's yielded some nice goodies this year. Wanted to try a new machine, and it worked pretty well.

Ended with:

17 silver coins (11 yesterday and 6 today)
14 buffalo nickels (10 yesterday and 4 today)
Sheaffer's Pencil Lead brass case
Cool vintage toy car
Old gold ring - any idea of age? There are no markings at all.

What looks to be a pewter rattail spoon. Any idea of age? I heard these can date to the 1700s, but most of the finds here have been 1900s. Although I did get a large cent here earlier this year.

Thanks for looking!

Thats some serious digging!!!! Great looking haul ya have!!!!:icon_thumleft:

Wow looks like a jackpot, must have been an untouched site :occasion14:

That's a crazy amount of silver!! What was the new machine you were running?

DAMN WHAT A BEAUTIFUL RAT TAIL SPOON IN PRISTINE CONDITION AND THAT GOES FOR THE REST OF YOUR FINDS . MAN WHAT A SPOON . ALMOST FORGOT THAT RING IS A AWESOME LOOKING PEICE OF JEWELRY ...

Thanks guys! Wondering if I should coat the spoon with Renaissance wax or anything? It seems pretty stable now, but I want to make sure it stays stable. Saw a similar spoon online, and it said "early 18th century". Is that possible?

The spoon is a rat tail dognose form.

The style would ordinarily date it to the 1720's to 40's or so... but it is in remarkably good condition for a pewter spoon having spent that long in the ground. Too good in fact.

Either one of two things is true... It is a period piece that was lost much more recently... or it is a repro piece like the kind produced as tourist fodder at Williamsburg.

Wow! You just flat out killed it! That's a great haul for two hunts! Was all this with the Etrac? Congrats!

It was found in saltwater mud. I've seen others pull out pewter from similar environments, and it somehow likes pewter. But, with that being said, so far the oldest thing to come out of this area was a large cent (1851 I believe). I don't know how far back this particular area was used, but the surrounding areas/towns date to the 1600s and 1700s.

Either way, should I throw on some Renaissance wax?

Oops, never answered the question... this hunt I tried a White's TDI SL. Thing is a beast on low tone objects. Apparently it especially loves Buffalo nickels. Had previously hunted the spot with the CTX and wanted to see if a different detector would help.

Awesome digs in the past 2 hunts. You dug enough keepers in those 2 hunts that would account for 2 months of digging for me.:occasion14: Awesome site/s.. That old car is so cool and the ring looks to be from the late 1800s. Sorry to say I do not know much about spoons though.

I was hoping the ring could be late 1800s! Didn't know if it was prior to needing the karat stamp, or if the stamp was removed when it was resized.

So far the spoon is holding up. Is there a chance it will start flaking?

Your toy car looks to be a 1930s Barclay slush lead model ... I found a pink one earlier this year that looks almost like it

You described the Whites as a "beast" on low tones...I guess so! congrats!

Some of the depth on items was pretty impressive with the TDI. It's probably because I'm out of shape, but I was sore after the first day. Very stable machine, and not a bad price either.

Great finds! Especially that wild ring!
