Sunday was my fifth and what will likely be my final hunt at the site dug by the arkies last summer. The finds have been much harder to come by lately, but I still managed to find a few keepers that the arkies missed. I never get tired of making ‘eyeball finds’. These these are finds that the detector doesn’t see because they’re often not made of metal, such as bone, teeth or ceramic buttons.

My first find was the brass shield buckle, followed a while later by what I feel must be a horse rosette due to its weight and construction. I also found one glass and one ceramic cuff button and a number of horse and cow teeth. I also found an unusually shaped oblong stone. I’m having trouble deciding if it’s natural or was possibly a tool used by the early Native Americans. I’m also going to post it in the
North American Indian Artifacts forum to get their opinions. :icon_scratch:

Thanks very much for looking,
Dave

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Progress is sometimes another word for destruction unfortunately. Good saves from “progress”.

Thanks buddy.
I didn't notice a small fracture in the buckle until I washed it last night.
Dave

Hey, you're in the GTA!
You don't have to dig too far to get to China, just head down to Dundas & Spadina. :laughing7:

I completely agree with your statement regarding 'progress', here in the Durham Region the history is disappearing fast!
Dave

Say Dave, What color is that stone if you scratch it! I've see white Arkansas stone for sharpening straight razors that looked a lot like that.

Being in Durham myself, I’m constantly frustrated with the pace of the bulldozer and the fact I’m not retired (with kids) and therefore have little time to devote to trying to recover more.

Congrats on the awesome finds! :icon_thumleft:

Very nice rosette, I believe I have found the same one a few weeks back. Great looking buckle, never seen this type before. Congratulations!

Fank you. :laughing7:

I don't know Phil, I haven't scratched it? :icon_scratch:
I'm still waiting for the guys in the Native American Forum to come to a conclusive decision on it.

Interesting theory though that it may have been a razor or knife sharpening stone.

Thanks ,

Dave

I don't know if you're old enough to remember the TeePee Drive-In at Liverpool & Kingston Road. I saw 'The Sting' there with our family in 1973, I was 9 years old... my dad was always a big Paul Newman fan.
I grew up in south Scarborough, but my wife and I moved out of the city after we got married in '96.

All I can do is try and save one one relic at a time, before it's buried under asphalt. :BangHead:

Thank you for your support Professor.

Thank you for your post Anton, I've found a few of these 'shield buckles' in my area.
I think it made a small statement about the folks who bought these harness buckles for their horses, they were proud horse owners.

Best of luck to you in MTL,
Dave
