Last silver of '08 and first silver (?) of '09, plus other things.

Went out Wednesday, the 31st, to my old reliable amusement park woods. Battled the snow and frigid winds and finally came up with a nice 1945 Mercury dime.

Went out again today, January 1, 2009 to another wooded area. Not nearly as cold as yesterday and the ground was still soft in the woods. There was just a light frozen crust in some spots, which presented no deterence to my woods digger. I found this curious sliver colored Lincoln Memorial Penny. I'm wondering if anyone has seen such a penny before. It seems to be more sharply struck and slightly bigger than a regular penny. A look at the edge appears to show a sandwich effect, with two outer layers over an inner core. What do you think?

Regular penny over silver penny:

Edge: 08-09 006.webp

Also found this Navy button:

And this tie bar: 08-09 005.webp

The backside of that merc looks awesome, at first I thought maybe that penny is one of those coins that squirt water? I have a nickel that squirts water!

Nice finds, Chris

i see what you mean about that penny...that's pretty weird. never seen anything like that before. you always seem to be able to coax at least one more piece of silver out of that spot! it must have been loaded with stuff 20 years ago!

Way to send out the old with the new with great finds. Would love to go out but too much snow here in the northwest country...LOL

Skier Bob, Concerning the slightly oversized 88 Lincoln cent, I also have one but mine is an 89.

Mine appears to be made of zinc, and is almost the size of a nickel and the edge also has that

rimmed effect on both edges . I sorta wondered if the mint accidently used a nickel collar for

the cent planchet , so that when the planchet was struck , it just expanded to nickel size . The

problem with that theory is that upon close examination , all the design elements on my coin

are slightly larger than those on a proper sized cent. I may send mine in to one of the

numismatic certification companies for an opinion . Argentium.

Coingrats on the silver! Maybe you can get 5 cents instead of one cent for that memorial, does look strange like a double or offset stamp. HH, Mike
