I've got a lot of catching up to do here on treasurenet, as I've been off-line for over a week now. I see a couple new banner pics up there, that look AWESOME!!!!!!!

Well, I didn't find any banner finds in my last three hunts, but I did find at least one silver coin on each hutn, as well as a few other keepers.

I'll keep the words short this time, as I've got lots of pics - I hope nobody still uses dial-up modems cuz their going to hate me :BangHead:

The first of my last three hunts was about 10 days ago, and I went back to my favorite campground area where I had lost my 18K wedding band in September and then found it a couple of weeks ago - I think that was my last post. So my hunt from 10 days ago went something like this...

This is a neat little brass pencil sharpener, made in Germany...

IMG_0340.jpg

IMG_0346.jpg

IMG_0364.jpg

IMG_0353.jpg

And if anyone can tell me what this is, it would be greatly appreciated... - maybe a stirrup?

IMG_0365.jpg

For the second of my last three hunts, last Tuesday I drove about 90 minutes to hit another campsite area, and didn't have much luck until I spent some time under this beautiful redwood tree...

IMG_0391.jpg

Where I pulled out this beauty...

IMG_0386.jpg

IMG_0388.jpg

I stumbled upon a pretty neat site while wandering around in the woods and along the creek at this campground...

IMG_0383.jpg

The campground director told me that this particular structure had burned down many years ago.

Didn't find much of anything around this chimney and slab, though, as the ground was so highly mineralized, and the area is loaded with hotrocks - actually most of the campground area is like this - wreaks havoc with my explorer II.

Here was my total take on hunt #2...

IMG_0421.jpg

IMG_0405.jpg

IMG_0410.jpg

IMG_0423.jpg

And here are four of the hotrocks that I brought home. Each one gives off a really nice "silver tone", and a magnet sticks to each one - some much stronger than the others... I wish I knew more about meteorites, as I always wonder if I have one and just don't know it.

IMG_0401.jpg

Unfortunately, I spent a little too much time in the woods, and ended up with some nasty poison oak that I've been dealing with all week now...

IMG_0522.jpg

Then yesterday I went out again, back to the first campground, but this time I decided to use the E-Trac. I just read a new book on the Explorer and E-Trac, and decided it was time to give my Explorer II a rest and spend more time getting to know the E-Trac.

One of the things that the book kept reminding me was that with the Explorer and E-Trac, a very slow sweep speed is real important. I tend to like swinging the coil pretty fast, and I realized that I have been swinging the coil WAAAAAAAY too fast with these two machines. So, before heading out yesterday, I put a little reminder on my coil...

IMG_0476.jpg

And it paid off!!! First find of the day was a wheatie...

IMG_0475.jpg

Then, the very next detection was another real high tone, and up came a nice rosie...

IMG_0478.jpg

Not too far away, that sweet high tone rang out again, and there was silver once again in the bottom of my hole...

IMG_0481.jpg

IMG_0483.jpg

Then I went for a while with finding some clad and digging some trash as I was wanting to get more used to what my E-Trac was telling me with its different audio signals. But then I got my hat trick for the day, and a nice silver reeded edge sticking out of the plug - LOVE THAT!!!!

IMG_0486.jpg

IMG_0488.jpg

Later on in the hunt, I found a big copper disk that someone had shot with a gun, and I thought that maybe I had found my first large cent, but then I thought it was a bit too big, and when I rubbed some of the dirt off, I could make out the words SHOT WITH A KLEANBORE REMINGTON CARTRIDGE. Boy was I ever thrilled with this find. Then, not more than 10 feet away, I found another identical token that had also been shot. Here they both are all cleaned up... anyone know how old they might be???

IMG_0508.jpg

IMG_0502.jpg

IMG_0507.jpg

Here is the haul from yesterday's hunt...

IMG_0491.jpg

And here are the keepers all cleaned up, including the 3 silvers for the day, and four wheaties...

IMG_0493.jpg

I don't think the button is anything special - probably just a fashion button, and I can't read the words around the center shield - if anyone can ID the button, please let me know...

IMG_0501.jpg

The item that looks like a piece of pipe, or gigantic ring is baffling. When I first dug it, I thought it was just an inch wide piece of steel pipe. But then I rubbed the dirt off of it, and saw that it has a hammered finish. I wish I knew the story behind this item, as someone did a beautiful job making it. It shined up really well...

Well, that does it for the recap of my last three hunts. I hope you stuck with it, and enjoyed the picture show!

Happy Hunting,

Great hunt.

Thanks for sharing. I think it's worth the poison Ivy ;D

That is an old iron stirrup........The symbol in the button almost looks like a 1st Cavalry Patch  NICE FINDS

Welcome back, Jim.

I know I've said this before, but you've got a great spot there for the old stuff.

I lost count of the number of silver you found with all those pics, but I have no problem looking at them....very nice!!

Yes, you've got to swing slow with the Explorers if you want to find the deep stuff. It's a little hard to tell from your pics, but it doesn't look like your silver coins are very deep at that location (4-7" ?).

Great Post!

Congrats,

Nice finds. This was a great post with some great pics. As for the Explorers....yep....swing 'em slow...and reap the rewards

I think maybe your "hammered pipe" is a boy scouts neck scarf ring, saw something like it years ago back when I was a wee boy scout :)
Great finds by the way !

Hey Dan, thanks for the comment. Yeah, this spot has been pretty fruitful over the past 6 months. I've got a list of other sites I want to hit, but can't seem to stay away from this one. And you are right, the silver coinage is all pretty shallow - in the 3 to 6 inch range. The 1914 Barber dime I found a few weeks back was only about 2 inches deep.

Thanks Bryce! I think you were actually referred to a few times in the Explorer / E-Trac book I read. Unless there is another Bryce out there who knows the Explorer really well :D "Low and slow... low and slow... low and slow..."

You gotta love those old sites. Those are some great finds. Like you say, nothing like the reeded edge! Sweet silver, congrats. jgas

Great finds. That '43 Merc cleaned up well.

Yep Jim....I go so slow I've nearly nodded off a few times' ;D ....but usually a deepie sound will open my eyes again

Great pictures and comments. I felt as if I was there with you. Excellent hunt, keep up the good work.

SUPER 3 HUNTS. LIKE ALL THE SILVER.

I'll join the chorus and chime in to say that your photos are wonderful. Makes you almost think you're right there on the hunt. Sucks about the poison ivy but hopefully it was worth it. I used to get it all the time when I was a kid. Best thing in the world to get rid of it is to get a tongue depressor (Popsicle stick) and rub the crap out of it...feels good doesn't it?...anyway, after you've rubbed it almost raw, pour Hydrogen Peroxide on it. It'll bubble up and in a few days it will be dried up.

Just a little bit of unsolicited advice from one who knows all about poison ivy/oak/sumac.

All 3 hunts are awesome!!!
(love the reminder)

Hi Jim,
Great post - Great finds!    Thanks for all the pics.

Congrats on the E-Trac. I had my eye on one but can't swing the $$ right now.

You've had some real nice hunts! Look at all that silver! :o I think Sandfisher is right, that round ring must be a Scout slide, especially given your track record with those. :)

I had to laugh about your reminder. I'm guilty of going too fast as well. When I look up, I see that there's so much territory to cover and only so many hours, and - well, I need to work on my patience... ::) I'm sure I've passed many a good target by. >:(

I also bought Andy's book. It gave me something to do when we were buried in snow. I got a lot of good ideas from it. We've got a lull in the cold & snowy weather for a few days, so I've been able to get out 3 of the last 4 days for some woods hunting. It's 30 now, but going up to 40 later, even with the wind its a heat wave! Definitely going to try again today.

Again, great post! I'm glad your time away was spent hunting those good sites you hit!

Thanks Neil. Yeah, I do the same thing you do - so much ground to cover, I'd better get swinging and walking quickly to cover as much of it as possible. And I also always seem to think that the real treasure is always where I'm not, so I need to keep moving :D

The reminder did help, and I will be keeping it there and will always try to slow down as slow as I can - it is hard, but I try to count out 4 seconds for each direction of the sweep - 4 to the right, 4 back to the left.

Good luck braving the cold. We head to Michigan on Saturday, and I've got a DFX there at my in-laws house that I hope to break out a few times while we are there. I just don't know what to expect for snow cover and frozen ground.

Thanks for the comment on my photos, and also for the tip on the poison oak. I might try that. It has dried up pretty good at this point - I have been holding a blow dryer to it with the heat as high as I can stand it. I read this tip online, and it takes the itch away for 4 to 6 hours, and also helps dry it out real good.

Nice long post and great pictures, feel like I was there with you, LOL! Lots of interesting finds and variety. HH, Mike

Great post. That one item looks like a fancy" napkin ring"
according to my better half. Looks like you have a great site there.
