Relic Hunting
I got a few times in the last week or so, and met up with some good friends around North Carolina to do some detecting. I managed to find a really nice early Flintlock Musket side plate, Just identified from over in what is it from Nola Ken being from a 1700's Brown Bess musket :o . Another find from the site was the really nice looking sportsman "Wild Boar" button circa 1830's- 1860 :headbang: Sporting the Quality mark:
"P & Co. Superior Rich Colour" (British Made)
Thanks for looking

Posted on your sideplate in "What Is It?" It looks to be from a Brown Bess, although as Timekiller pointed out that sideplate was used on other rifles as well. Really cool find!
Thanks Ken and Pete for the ID. I'm stoked to see these older relics coming from this site

Glad you are doing well up there! I have fond memories of us meeting up for a hunt in Virginia, even though the finds were slim that day. Can't say we didn't try. :) I have been doing well down here in Louisiana as of late.

I love the button. All of those big sportsman's buttons are killer display pieces. I've seen pheasant buttons and an ibex dug, but never a boar.

Nice side plate too!

Best Wishes,

Buck
Hey Wil, It's good to hear you are doing well my friend. I also have good memories of our hunt last year. Maybe you can get this way soon for another?

Congrats on the Brown Bess sideplate Mike. I've dug the last inch of each end, but you got the whole thing. Even though its broke it will display well.

The boar's head sportsman button speaks for itself :director:
I appreciate that Steve. We still need to plan a hunt this year buddy

Hey thanks Quindy. Those Sportsman's are always welcome

Congratulations Mike, I could've sworn it was whole from that pic you sent me earlier :icon_scratch: but that important part is you have the whole thing and it will display TERRIFICALLY!

That's a Sweet relic buddy, and the Sportsman's button is great; I really like those buttons as you can find a variety of different types. Get back out to that spot as soon as possible and

really work it and I'll be lookinforward to what else you find! :occasion14: :occasion14:

Great finds there. Looks like you've got some Roman numerals engraved into the back of the sideplate. What's the number? Looks like VIII.

Great digs. I sure hope I can find the rest of the Brown Bess I think is hiding in the area I hunt. I found the Butt Plate with the screws still in it so I am hoping the rest of the gun is there.

Nice assortment there

That side plate will sure set your imagination to run wild :laughing7:

Nice group of finds Mike. Glad to see you got your boar, Sweet... Arty

off an old musket....now that is cool :notworthy:

Great digs. I dug up a wild boar button today. When I did a google image search this post came up. Are they rare?

Here's mine. It's not in near the shape yours is, but I'll take it. I have to wonder why it was lost at the Battle of Monocacy. Is it possible that rebel troops used these?

I would not say they are Rare, but I wouldnt say common either. The Boar Motiff seems to be the most popular. It is possible anybody could have worn them as they were on a jacket
