Hi all,

Just found this today, can't make it out but it sure looks like some type of button to me...not typical of the kind of metal you normally associate with buttons. Looks like zinc or lead. The reverse seems to have a loop. Can't really make out the front even after cleaning. It's 3/4" wide. The yard had a house on it that was built in 1910.

Thanks,
Nat

Your button says US on it. If you can make out an eagle above the letters and a wreath underneath. It could be a US great coat button from the 1830s-1840s

The button is made out of pewter and is in surprisingly good shape for pewter buttons as most aren’t slick like that and become brittle after so many years in the ground. The button could mean that the site you’re hunting is much older than the house built in 1910. Do you have any other finds from the same site?

Thanks, yeah also another button that has the word COLOUR on the back (along with other words hard to read) which is a British spelling, an 1861 British half penny an Indian Head penny, wheat pennies, etc. The front was landscaped with a retaining wall so I could have found more if not for that.
