I found this guy today deep at the base of a tree. About 3.5 inches tall.
I think that it's lead. Any way that I could clean it up at least a little.
Thanks for any advice, as always.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Thanks for the responses. The figure is amazingly intact. Tail is tucked. I soaked it and tried gently cleaning. New pictures attached. Just not sure how to potentially clean it more, or if that's even possible.
Any thoughts on age? Google image search only shows big famous sculptures. Thanks again.

NICE find for sure :)

Really neat piece. It looks like you have gotten most or all of the dirt off and what remains is corrosion. If you remove the corrosion, it appears as if there will be pits underneath. So perhaps you can't improve it much more.
Lead usually forms a thin protective layer when it is in the soil and does not corrode in the way this item has. So maybe it's pewter. The old pewter was a lead alloy with other metals.
When I find an old pewter button, I clean it gently like you have, then coat it with a diluted white, waterborne glue (PVA) to give it mechanical strength so that it does not lose fragments from its edges. But yours is big and strong enough so that mechanical degradation will probably not be a problem.

That is a nice complete figure. Most are damaged somehow.

That left side is just great. Fancy chaps, reins, and all. I'm guessing you found nothing on the bottom to aid in an ID. Paper weight? Lamp or clock figure? Great find.
