DC Matt suggested that it's a lead nail cap, not a nail and I believe him to be correct. I find them around every old home site in my area.

We find them down here too at old home sites. I assume the lead cap was seal of sorts to aid in preventing water from leaking past the nail head and into the structure.

The lead head was on top and around the nail head. When the nail was driven in, the lead flattened and helped keep moisture and rain from leaking down the shank of the nail when used on tin/metal roofing panels.
