Found this at an old farm site. Found along with coins and tokens from the 20s/30s. Someone stated 'mushroomed lead bullet' but I've my doubts. I'm thinking lead seal of some sort. But, anyone else have any more definitive answer?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a fired bullet that hit something solid to me.

It would be one huge bullet. I can't even imagine the caliber size it would be. The 'base' of it is larger than the bore of my 12ga shotgun. It's about the outside diameter of a 12ga barrel.

It's a broken off head from an old lead head roofing nail.

I've never heard of such. What era are they from?

Edit: Also, the "nail" portion would have to be bigger around than a 12ga shotgun bore. So, I dunno. That's a thick roofing nail.

Search lead head roofing nails. They've been in use for a century or more. Not an uncommon find at old house sites.

Yours does appear to be too large for a roofing nail head. It could simply be a blob of lead to fill a hole.

Until the mid-20th C, when people learned how bad lead is for humans, they used it to repair anything and everything you can think of. But it is not a bale seal...

Yeah, I wasn't thinking bale seal as those are usually stamped. I was thinking more of a bottle seal or some other sort of usage to seal a hole. Much like you're speaking of. It just seems a shallow hole, so not quite sure what it could have been used to seal up.

It is a "pot-mend". I have seen like pieces recovered in the UK, on YouTube videos.
