lead thing???

does anyone know what this is. or how old it is. it was found it at a very old site so i dont think its that new.

It's a hem weight, used to help a heavy coat, robe, or other garment hang properly. Also used on draperies. It's probably fairly modern (post-1900), although they've remained pretty much the same for well over a century.

They do. Although now used more often for draperies than for clothing, hem weights are still sewn into long, flowing garments such as choir robes and baptismal gowns.

I don't think they use lead ones now

Lead is really only dangerous as fumes and dust but now a day's if you see it you get sick. When I was a kid (circa 1960's) we use to play with those little weights, same goes for mercury. Mercury came in chemistry sets and we used it to coat coins with until they made that illegal. Fumes from mercury are deadly, and that's about it. Those lead him weights where all around and I use to find them and bend then just because it could be done.

Although they're definitely scarcer, they're still around. Some are now plastic coated, but plain lead ones remain available. Also, square ones are now more common than the traditional round variety. Here's a plain lead, square drapery/hem weight sold by the Sunshine Foam Co., an upholstery and drapery supply firm in Cincinnati, Ohio.
