Coin? Im' stumped!!

I found this in the yard of a 1740's colonial home a few months ago. It's encrusted and been soaking in olive oil since. It has the edge symetry of a small coin, not a button. It might be copper but not sure. Several feet away was an 1880 seated dime. Are there US coins of this size? Should I be looking for something on it? Thanks for any help! GD :)

It could be a foreign coin that circulated in colonial times. A French liard is one good possibility, they are quite small and copper.

If your like me... you have no patience for olive oil, but that's just what i would do. Leave it alone and see what happens. You have nothing to loose and don't want to screw up something nice.

And... I found lots of coins that were 13mm or 14mm so the possibillity is there.

If the oil has been working, I'd put it back in for a while before I tumbled it or tried to clean it. ;D

I would say it is probably a flat button with the shank broken off. Atleast every time I have found something like this it turns out to be one! >:( Maybe you luck is better than mine tho!! :D
