Detector(s) used
Tesoro Vaquero
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
In my research for the best metal detector for my needs and budget I have found that the one I want has a very annoying tone to my ears. Should this even be a consideration? Are there detectors known to have a more pleasant tone?

Some let you set the tones you want.

Some let you set the tones you want.
Could you name just a couple? I want to get into this hobby but I'm trying to be realistic about how much I can stand listening to a detector that gets on my nerves

hmmm I haven't tried many different brands.

Least annoying of my 2 favorite was the Sovereign.
many have complained about the tones on the sovereign, But,
coming to sovereign from whites., I thought the Sovereigns tones were awesome,
from day one. and easy to interpret

Most annoying, the explorer SE pro.
I am finally getting used to them,
but the SE was a nightmare, especially first trip
across the hunting grounds.
not tonal change so much,
it was the amount of noise, made it hard for me to understand
ground sounds from metal sounds.

I don't remember the Explorer 2 or the Explorer XS
sounding that bad

I know the Minelab CTX lets you set the sounds you want. I think White's V3i might too, but not positive on that. Of course, since you are just starting you probably shouldn't be spending $2500 on detector. They ALL make noise and all can be annoying in trashy areas. You might want to borrow a detector first to see if you really like the hobby.

Is it the threshold sound you dislike or the target sound? If it is the threshold, there are some detectors that use silent search. If it is the target sound, look for one like the Xterra that has variable sound based on target. This detector can also be set to use one tone, four tones, or up to 99 tones based on target.

and don't forget that once you pull up that gold or silver, you are going to come to love what was once an annoying sound. Also, if you are watching diggers, no detectors in search mode sound like the ones on the program, thank goodness.

After listening to several youtube videos, its the target sound when someone passes the detector over the target about ten to 15 times. I am always thinking "just locate the damn thing already".
I have officially reached the paralysis by analysis stage. I'm sure you are right when say that once I dig up something valuable I will love what I thought was once an annoying sound.
I am off to get a Tesoro Vaquero.
I appreciate everyone's input!

Well, I have seen some YT vids where they seem to incessantly beep the target. The majority of the time they are listening to the slight changes in sound or watching the display changes. Those subtle changes can mean the difference between a zinc cent, a Mercury dime and a rusty nail.

That is my inexperience showing. I never thought of that-so much still to learn.

LOL And I thought i had a problem!!! Im Hearing Impaired And Reds Detector In Normal mode Drive Me Batty!!! Whites Coin master pro But In Tone Id Mode It is Sweet to My Ears!!! HH Chug

What is your budget, and which ones have you found annoying? Most entry and mid level machines aren't too bad. The Garrett Ace series and AT Pro can be annoying to some as well as the flutey tones of the FBS minelabs at least until you get used to them. JMHO.

I'd like to have one where you could add your own like with ringtones. So for silver it would say "GARBAGE" and for junk it would scream "GOLD COIN-GOLD COIN" ... that would be awesome.

I bought the Vaquero and after a full day of hunting I realize what a ridiculous question it was. In the process of trying to find targets and adjust the settings I would sweep the coil repeatedly over a suspected target and the tone was not annoying to me. Trying to find the target was though. Very frustrating.

When I get a new detector I start with a coin on the ground so that I can start to see where the coin is in relationship to the coil. Do it a few times and then I move on to a playground, where the digging is easy and there are usually a few coins to be found so I can start understanding how different targets sound.

also, if you don't have an excellent pinpointer like the Garrett Propointer, I strongly suggest you get one. It will make finding your targets much easier.

Are you using headphones? You want a good set of headphones. By that i mean a pair that adjust so they are comfortable, match the impedance of your machine, block out enouh outside noise but not al of it and not so expensive that you cringemat the price.

Yes I am using Calrad headphones.
I was at a park with a lot of trash. I kept bumping the settings, and experimenting with the settings as well. I have read the manual and have received instructions on the detector.
I need to follow the suggestions of some of the people on the board as far as testing it at home. Plus I am starting to realize how just getting some time on the machine will help

Getting time on it will be the best thing possible. I'm not familiar with that model, but I would caution against constantly making changes. You will learn the detector much fast if you set it up as the manual suggests, or as someone familiar with it suggests. Once it is set, then put time on it and learn what different tones mean by digging everything.

well the most annoying has to be the ace 250 --the guy who get that sound up must be deaf --horrible sounding , sounds like a ice cream truck gone crazy
